Debussy's Danse (Tarantelle styrienne), originally for piano and orchestrated by Ravel, is also extremely well suited to performance on the organ. The Great Wall developed out of an improvisation, a homage to the Great Wall of China. Two motifs dominate in the work, which requires a three-manual organ: a two-measure ostinato in the pedal, and an oriental-sounding melody found on the manuals, in the basic shape and in the variations. The music leads seamlessly from an atmospheric picture into a rhythmically-driven crescendo, is interrupted by a storm fantasy before ending, after a second upsurge, in a radiant fortissimo. The dynamics and articulation are given very precisely in the score. The registration markings relate to the four-manual Muhleisen organ in the Stiftskirche Stuttgart, and are intended as a guide for performance. This thrilling work, which recalls Ravel's Bolero at certain moments, communicates directly with a wide range of audiences.
Scherzo For Organ was first published in 1917. It is dedicated to John Connell, a South African organist and Organ builder, with whom the composer became great friends when he travelled to Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Alfred Hollins (1865-1942) was an inspirational British organist, composer and teacher. Blind from birth, he travelled all over the UK and the British Empire, giving concerts and designing Organs. He eventually settled in Scotland, where he was an organist in Edinburgh for over forty years

Lemare's compositions are uneven in quality, but the best are still active in the repertoire. The Toccata di Concerto is certainly full of fireworks and has the capacity to show the abilities of a great Organ. The upper parts have plenty of French toccata style, but the theme in the pedals gives the piece substance, as does the romantic, chromatic interlude in the middle of the work.Organ virtuoso and composer Edwin Lemare was the world's highest-paid Organist at the height of his career in the early 1900's, drawing bravos from ctritics and the crowds who queued around the block to hear this most famous of Organists. After having served as a church Organist for a relativelyshort period, he began the life of a travelling recitalist, beginning with a hundred-recital tour of the USA and Canada in 1900, a career that continued until the stock market crash of 1929. Lemare was also virtuosic in his ability to transcribe great Orchestral works for the Organ, allowing audiences in those less urban times to hear works played live that they might have heard no other way.
