Rachmaninov wrote Vocalise for Voice and Piano but did not set a text to it unlike the other songs in the Op. 34 set. It immediately became popular and the composer fashioned several transcriptions of the work including one for Piano and another for Orchestra. This edition is arranged for Flute and Piano.

The Rhapsody, originally composed for solo piano and orchestra was written during the summer of 1934 and was premiered by the Philadephia Orchestra, under the direction of Leopold Stokowski and with Rachmaninoff at the piano, on November 7 of that year.
