Par GRAY ALAN. The four organ sonatas of Alan Gray (1855-1935) stand as one of the largest contributions to the sonata repertoire by an English composer. Published around 1890, they also mark an advancement in the repertoire of potential concert works. Gray had not studied abroad and his sonatas demonstrate a compelling emergence of a distinctly English style of organ sonata after almost half a century of continental influence. All four sonatas show a strong command of not only writing for the instrument but also the art of registration. Gray?s indications are clear, logical, and practical. He writes for a symphonic organ of at least three manuals but many of the pieces could be played on an instrument of only two manuals. The use of contrasting manual colours between phrases and the incorporation of solo stops is notable for conveying Gray?s views on interpretation and his strong understanding of the instrument. / Date parution : 2022-05-31/ Recueil / Orgue

Par GLADSTONE FRANCIS EDWARD. The organ sonatas of Francis Edward Gladstone (1845-1928) are fine examples of the developing English sonata tradition of the late-nineteenth century and early twentieth century. They exemplify a practical approach to the instrument with consistently moderate technical demands while also allowing the player scope for interpretation with the increasing availability of instruments that were conceived with a symphonic tonal palette in mind. As discussed in The Genesis and Development of an English Organ Sonata (2017), the English sonatas had an important pedagogical role jointly inherited from Mendelssohn?s very practical and popular approach to the instrument and the continued European legacy of the lesson-sonata tradition whereby in learning a piece you also learned the instrument and vice versa. / Date parution : 2022-05-31/ Recueil / Orgue

Contents: 54 compositions by William Brown (Wilhelmo Brouno), Christian Erbach(?), Andrea Gabrieli, Claudio Merulo, Vincenzo Pellegrini, Peter Philips, Gerardus Scroncx, Paul Siefert, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck and Anonymouses Editor: Jean Ferrard Publication Date: 2008 Description Among the sources of seventeenth century keyboard music, the Book of the Crosiers of Liège occupies an exceptional position since it contains some unica of composers as important as Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck and Peter Philips. It is also a remarkable manuscript in that this is one of the earliest appearances in organ music of accurate indications regarding registrations. Since its first edition in 1910, as the last volume of Alexandre Guilmant’s Archives des Maîtres de l’Orgue, musicological research has established new concordances, made some new attributions and proposed a few hypotheses which must still be confirmed. In this way, the principal document concerning the organ in Liège and its music will again be accessible as a whole, with editorial remarks and commentaries, that seek to provide the reader with the most recent findings of musicological research as well as a rigorous and practical musical text. Toccatas and various compositions (Biblioteca Geral da Universidade de Coimbra, Secção dos Reservados, Ms. MM 60) Editors: Andrea Macinanti, Francesco Tasini Series: Alessandro Scarlatti. Complete Works for Keyboard Publication Date: 2007 Pages: pp. 144 The third volume of Alessandro Scarlatti?s complete works comprises ms. MM 60 kept at the Coimbra University Library (Biblioteca Geral da Universidade de Coimbra, Portugal ? Secção dos Reservados). The -manuscript contains pieces specifically ascribed to Scarlatti, as the title in c. 61r shows: Sonate / Per / ORGANO / Del / Sig.r / Alesandro Scarlatti. The section following a new heading in c. 107r ? TOCCATE / per Organo ? can also be considered Scarlatti?s work. a confirmation of this assessment stems from cc. 107v-109v, Toccata, and 109v-110v, Fuga in G major, both of which pieces also feature in the Higgs ms. (New Haven, Yale University, Misc. Ms. 164) as well as in ms. Add. 32161 (London, British Library) and, moreover, the same Toccata is also comprised in ms. 3958 in Münster?s Diözesanbibliothek (Santini Collection). The extensive initial section in ms. MM 60 cc. 1r-38v, with no indication of authorship, is included in an Addendum. its excellent-quality musical writing is perfectly in keeping with Alessandro Scarlatti?s style, though at the moment the music cannot be attributed to him with any degree of certainty. the music resembles some of Gaetano Franzaroli?s Risposte d?Organo, also comprised in the same manuscript.
