Solemnitas. This short but solemn overture was written on the occasion of the 110th jubilee of Harmonie Hautcharage, Luxembourg. It is an homage to Jean-Paul Frisch and his son Gérard (the present conductor), who each have been conducting the ensemble for many years. Under their leadership, the band has developed and improved remarkably. The very first musical theme, presented during the introduction of this little overture, is based on the letters hidden in the names Jean-Paul and Gérard Frisch (in which h is considered b ? as it is in German), thus aiming the spotlight on both key figures in the history of Harmonie Hautcharage. After the rather stately intro, the allegro is more joyful and lighthearted, thus depicting the optimism of the many young players of the band. The end is exciting and energetic: it radiates positivity and belief in the future.

Par SPARKE PHILIP. Philip Sparke a composé cette oeuvre à l’occasion du 40e anniversaire de l’Orchestre d’Harmonie Izumiotsu City Band d’Osaka au Japon. La création a eu lieu le 19 novembre 2006 par la formation dédicataire sous la direction de Kazuyoshi Uemura. La composition débute avec un majestueux Lento, basé sur une fanfare d’ouverture, exposée par les trompettes. S’ensuit un Vivace virevoltant, qui reprend le thème initial sur un ostinato rythmique. Un changement de tonalité introduit la très ample ligne mélodique du trio, avant de reprendre le thème premier. Camille Saint-Saëns was justifiably proud of his Symphony No. 3 in C minor op. 78, dedicated to the memory of Franz Liszt. Like BeethovenÂ’s Ninth, this so-called “Organ Symphony” was commissioned by the Philharmonic Society in London, where itreceived its premiere on 19 May 1886. In this first scholarly-critical edition of the symphony, a great many inconsistencies and mistakes inherent in the previously used edition have been unveiled and corrected. Symphony No. 13 for Orchestra was composed in 2013 by Danish composer and organist Ib Nørholm. Premiered by the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Baldur Brönnimann (cond.) on March 09 2017. Parts are available on hire: hire@ewh.dk  

Prelude-During the time that he was playing in the Orchestra of the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen Carl Nielsen composed his two operas of which Saul and David is the first. Criticised as more of an oratorio than an opera Saul and David has not enjoyed many performances although this short majestic and psychologically revealing Prelude to Act II has become a popular short concert piece. It evokes the majesty of the court of Saul just before news arrives of the Philistine giant Goliath and hints at struggles both external and within the main characters. The dissonant Trumpets may have aroused excitement at the premiere in 1902 and still create a powerful effect in today'sperformances.
