The Organ Plus One series was specially conceived for semi-professional church musicians and instrumentalists. It takes its bearings from the liturgical calendar and the pieces can be easily played in church services evening recitals or small concerts. Included are pieces which are freely-composed or based on chorales either original works or arrangements by the editor. In this volume the works relate to hymns of the Reformation including some composed by Martin Luther. Xavier Darasse (1934-1992) a pupil of Duruflé and Messiaen has produced an organ adaptation of the famous three-movement Piano Variations Op.27 (1936) a groundbreaking composition in serial music. from the Opera 'Tannhauser'-During his time in Weimar (1848 1861) Liszt developed a then entirely new organ style which stands out for both orchestral and pianistic elements. Together with the choirmaster Alexander Wilhelm Gottschalg (1827 1908) from Tiefurt he regularly initiated so-called 'organ conferences'. And it was at the suggestion of Gottschalg that the present arrangement of the Pilgrim's Choir from the opera 'Tannhäuser' was written. With his version for organ Liszt by means of this example laid the foundations for the (not always undisputed) tradition extending to the present day of organ transcriptions from the operas of Wagner. 'Organistic' elements in the Pilgrims' Choir are theclassical chorale theme the solemn 'sacred' atmosphere of the solemn tempo as well as the expressive cantability. The linear intensification from the antiphonal-organ-like piano dolce of the beginning to the 'full organ' can be realized in a convincing manner with an orchestrally conceived three-manual organ with the sensitive use of the swell box and the successive seamless build-up of the crescendo pedal being of particular significance. Empreintes d?une grande austérité religieuse et destinées par leurs dimensions plutôt à l?orgue de concert, elles sont considérées par de nombreux organistes comme le testament musical du compositeur.

Franck mourut au début du mois de novembre 1890 des suites d?un accident de circulation survenu en mai 1890.

Il avait probablement déjà commencé le travail sur les trois Chorals en 1889, avant son accident. On sait néanmoins que la finition se prolongea jusqu?en automne 1890. Franck ne put toutefois plus surveiller la mise sous presse de la première édition, puisqu?elle parut seulement en 1892.

Notre édition Urtext tient compte pour la première fois de deux autographes jusqu?ici inconnus des 1er et 3e Chorals, se basant donc, en plus de la première édition, sur d?autres sources de première importance. / Classique / Partition / Broché /
