Carrickfergus is a much-loved traditional Irish song which has been recorded many times by contemporary artists, most famously, Joan Baez.
In making this arrangement I am attempting to create a work suitable for the more-advanced or concert player. My intention has been to use the original theme to construct a piece with structure and harmonic depth.
Carrickfergus is presented here in D major with a mid-way modulation to the dominant - A major.
I am excited at the idea of using well-known themes to create a concert repertoire suitable for all environments and which will appeal to guitarists and non-guitarists alike.

Three Pieces for Beginner Guitarists (Acoustic or Electric) by Dan Jones Presented in notes, TAB and easy chords (www.danjonesguitarist.com) As an active guitar teacher, I find that many beginner pupils want to learn either acoustic (steel string) guitar or electric guitar. I have also found a lack of quality resources in these styles which have musical interest, and which lay out some of the necessary technical and musical foundations for future learning. I composed these three little pieces for my own young students. They are played by those using their right-hand fingers, and a plectrum and I’ve found them to be very popular in both lessons and performance. The pieces can be learnt in any order (I have a slight preference for starting my pupils with D-Day Rock - the third in the collection). Below is an outline of the pedagogy behind them (1) Sore Finger Blues This is a simple twelve-bar blues which uses a combination of open strings and notes at the third and second frets. It can be played with a straight or swung rhythm. It is effective at a slow tempo for those needing time to place the fretting hand fingers. The main technical challenge is in bars 10 and 22 where the player moves the third finger between the G and A on string 1. Although this is traditionally an advanced technique, I’ve found my students find it comfortable, as long as the fingering outlined in the notes is followed. The chords are dominant (with major thirds). These clash against the minor pentatonic scale in a way which is typical of the style. The chords are quite simple for beginners. I have opted for a D5 power-chord in bars 9 & 21 which is easier than the usual D chord (which also works perfectly well). Plectrum players should be sure to anchor the plucking hand, either with the side of the hand resting on the bridge, or a finger against the scratch plate of the guitar. Fingerstyle players can anchor either with a finger touching the scratch plate of the guitar, or by resting the thumb on a bass string when the fingers are plucking, or vice versa. This is more typical of classical style. (2) Cross-String Traffic This piece was conceived as a fingerstyle piece, although it can be played using a plectrum. The challenge for plectrum players is to cross the strings smoothly. It is for this reason that the fretting hand is relatively simple so that learners can concentrate on the plucking hand. Players are also encouraged to press down the index finger on string 2 at the correct angle to allow the first string to resonate. Chords have once again been chosen to suit less-experienced fingers; therefore, I have opted for Dm6 instead of the more common Dm (a very tricky chord for beginners). Players should go for maximum resonance and notes played at fret 3 could be fretted with either fingers 3 or 4. (3) D-Day Rock This piece is made nearly entirely of open strings and third fret notes. Where there is string crossing, the music allows the player ‘thinking time’ to change accordingly. Teachers and learners can decide with which finger to press the third fret notes. The rhythmic complexities from bar 13 to the end pose no problems once players have the sound of the piece in their ear. Once again, chords have been selected for ease of playing. The Gm/D chord can be played with a 3-string barre (often quite easy for beginners where no fretted bass note is required) or using three separate fingers. The pedal D sounds effective musically. I have presented these pieces as ensemble works with large groups of beginners. Players and audiences alike have been very receptive! La Llorona is an iconic Spanish melody which tells of the supernatural 'weeping woman'. The melody has been used in films, animated and with real actors.
You will receive two versions with your single download - one in just notes and the other in notes and TAB.
Recently many exam boards allow candidates to submit their own choice of published music for performance. I would recommend this for ABRSM (or other boards) approximately Grade 3 level.
This version eliminates some of the advanced technical challenges found in other arrangements such as full barr shapes for extended periods and five-fret spreads. It adds other elements of musical interest such as dynamics, articulation and cross rhythms.

Scarborough Fair is a much-lovedtraditional English ballad, the text of which dates back to medieval times. Ithas been recorded many times by contemporary artists, most famously, Simon andGarfunkel.
In making thisarrangement I am attempting to create a work suitable for the more-advanced orconcert player. My intention has been to use the original theme to construct apiece with structure and harmonic depth.
Scarborough Fair iscomposed in the beautiful, ambient Dorian mode. It is firstly presented in ADorian and midway, modulates to D Dorian before returning to the original modewith a coda. By adjusting the sixth degree of the scale the theme is also heardin Aeolian mode.
I am excited at theidea of using well-known themes to create a concert repertoire suitable for allenvironments and which will appeal to guitarists and non-guitarists alike.
I have also triedperforming the piece with a capo placed at the second fret when I have felt myprogramme needed more harmonic variety.

I have arranged and written a number of popular Spanish and Latin American songs specifically to help the development of Sight Reading at Intermediate Level - this means you should be able to read and play finger style guitar from Early intermediate levee (Grade 3 Trinity College) or above. In the range Grade 3 to 5 the keys used in sight reading exams are C major/A minor, G Major /E minor (one sharp) and F Major/D Minor (one flat) and this book contains songs using these keys. This verison of the book contains no marking on the music at all except the key and time signature in order to develop sight reading and note recognition skills. Both parts of the duet are written at the same level so you can interchange which part you wish to play. There are progressions on the ii7 - V7 in both major and minor keys. There are also major, minor 6th and 7ths as well as dominant, diminished and augmented chords. As you go on you will find licks on flatted and raised ninths, augmented 11ths and 13th chords. Most important however, are the Application Exercises. There are six jazz etudes which contain chord progressions found in many of the jazz standards. You will have the opportunity to use the licks in measures that deal with the chords that you have dealt with in the previous section. There are parts where you are asked to fill in your own licks in between the written melody. All the material that you have just worked on in the the last section can be used in each etude. By the end of the study, you can improve on the enitre song. It is a unique method that I have developed over the past 50 years. If you follow the method and work on all the exercises as directed, you will take your first steps in the Real way pros play jazz. There is even accompaniment provided for each etude. There are mp4s that are available at no extra cost if you have a device that will play them. There is also accompaniment provided at the end of the book if have musician friends play along with you. The process for obtaining the mp4s is explained at the beginning of the book under Application Exercises.

I offer an arrangement in D major of the traditional Flamenco Tanguillo de Cádiz as a second guitar to accompany my arrangement of the Tanguillo for solo guitar. The solo guitar arrangement is written in A major. To work as guitar 1 in the duet, the solo version must be played with the capo at the fifth fret to transpose the score to D major. This is normal practice in Flamenco guitar playing. The guitarist simply plays the score as if the capo were the nut. The tones/notes are then referred to as if they were being played in the first position, but they sound of course different.I created the arrangement in D major to accompany a student I taught to play the solo version so we could play and perform together. It was a lot of fun working on the arrangement and we had a great time playing the Tanguillo as a duet. It was also a big hit with audiences. I particularly recommend this arrangement for instructors teaching the solo version to intermediate students of Flamenco guitar, especially young students who will find it easier to play the Tanguillo at the fifth fret in D major. It is a great inspiration for  students to play along with their instructor, making music together. The arrangement also, of course, works just as well as a duet for two students or two experienced guitarists.The D minor section contains the typical Andalusian cadence found in the more â??jondoâ? styles of Flamenco and serves as a first introduction to these darker more serious â??sonidos negrosâ? as Manuel de Falla referred to them. The many taps or â??golpesâ? found in the score are, as I said in the description of the Tanguillo solo, not absolutely essential, but they definitely add more â??punchâ? to the performance and give the arrangement a more earthy Gitano Andaluz character.

The solos in this volume contain no time signatures or bar lines. I did this because I wanted the solos to be very expressive in interpretation yet free-form in structure. The companion recording presents my interpretation of these works. You may interpret them differently and that is fine! All solos are in notation and tablature. When writing these solos I first envisioned the form as an extended cadenza. However, from my earlier trumpet playing days I recalled that, especially in the 19th century, a cadenza was a momentary break in a solo which gave the performer a chance to dazzle the audience with his or her virtuosity. These solos are not about that. Rather, they are a vehicle to give the guitarist an opportunity to move the listener with the performer's expressive ability. I also thought of these solos in the form of a chant. However, most chants are monophonic in form and these solos in various parts present a fairly lush harmonic structure. While the solos were written for a 7 string guitar, they may be played successfully on a 6 string guitar. Alternate notes for those found on the 7th string are shown in the tablature part. Also, the solo, Peace, is written in Dropped D tuning and makes little use of the 7th string pedal tones. The solos are contemplative in nature and provide ample opportunity for individual expression and interpretation. I hope you enjoy playing and performing these works.
