Music of the Spheres was commissioned by the Yorkshire Building Society Band and first performed by them at the European Brass Band Championships in Glasgow May 2004.The piece reflects the composers fascination with the origins of the universe and deep space in general. The title comes from a theory formulated by Pythagoras that the cosmos was ruled by the same laws he had discovered that govern the ratios of note frequencies of the musical scale. (‘Harmonia’ in Ancient Greek which means scale or tuning rather than harmony - Greek music was monophonic). He also believed that these ratios corresponded to the distances of the sixknown planets from the sun and thatthe planets each produced a musical note which combined to weave a continuous heavenly melody (which unfortunately we humans cannot hear). In this work these six notes form the basis of the sections Music of the Spheres and Harmonia. The pieces opens with a horn solo called t = 0 a name given by some scientists to the moment of the Big Bangwhen time and space were created and this is followed by a depiction of the Big Bangitself as the entire universe bursts out from a single point. A slower section follows called The Lonely Planet which is a meditation on the incredible and unlikely set of circumstances which led to the creation of the Earth as a planet that can support life and the constant search for other civilizations elsewhere in the universe. Asteroids and Shooting Stars depicts both the benign and dangerous objects that are flying through space and which constantly threaten our planet and the piece ends with The Unknown leaving in question whether our continually expanding exploration of the universe will eventually lead to enlightenment or destruction.

Evis Sammoutis' Particles (2015) for Flute (doubling Piccolo and Alto Flute) Violin and Cello. Particles was commissioned by the 2015 Milano EXPO for the musicians of the Divertimento Ensemble. The composer was one of 50 finalists selected after an International Competition by Expo 2015?s Italian Pavilion. The competition was organised by Divertimento Ensemble in collaboration with the City of Milano the Region of Lombardia MITO SettembreMusica and Sentieri selvaggi and all composers had to create compositions inspired by the theme 'Feeding the Planet Energy for Life'.The composer decided to concentrateon exploring the notion of ?Particles? (the smallest basic units of matter and energy) as the means of creating the main formal profile of this composition. This notion extends to all formal devises (texture figure and gesture). To use an analogy listening to this composition should feel like looking at a mosaic from an extremely short distance one?s eyes almost touching the intrinsic small tiles that create the larger picture. From this alternative perspective one begins to observe completely different patterns which went unperceived as part of the greater picture just as a closer look at a mosaic might reveal intricate bands of colour that would have been unnoticed from a greater distance. When this happens one can really appreciate the tiny details and nuances of the composition.Seen from afar these ?particles? create different textures than they do from a closer distance or through a microscope exploration different matters and different qualities of energy. This composition brings into foreground microscopic ?pictures? of the particles that constitute the totality of the work while simultaneously and unavoidably giving in its totality a larger formal picture over the course of time.Whilst the music is constructed into noticeably different blocks of sound each segment nevertheless originates from

In Distance is so titled because of the wide 'distance' between each of the instruments (Piccolo Harp and Bass Drum) in terms of register timbre and dynamics. The music itself is also distant in that it is very open anduses a great deal of space and silence. The piece was premiered on November 30th 1989.

Third Movement of A Tribute to Arthur Delamont-Imagine a band far off in the distance marching toward you ? soft at first the music becomes louder and louder; the red capes of the band sway in the wind getting closer and closer. It was this image that inspired Flying Colors. Famed bandmaster Arthur Delamont always programmed a march in his concerts and the hallmark of his band was their red capes. The work begins very softly with a distant snare drum beat. The trumpets enter quietly with the melody and with each new melodic entry the music grows and intensifies to a roaring finish. This is a fresh new take on a march and is sure to please players and audiences alike! Flying Colors is thethird movement of A Tribute to Arthur Delamont and was commissioned by the West Vancouver Youth Band.

Voyage au Centre de la Terre-This composition was based on the world-famous novel by the French author Jules Verne. This novel describes the attempt to reach the centre of the earth. The descent of the crater of the volcano called Snaeffels situated in Iceland marks thebeginning of this voyage to the sublunary world. The German geologist professor Lidenbrock is accompanied on this trip by his nephew Axel and an Icelandic guide named Hans. The last mentioned will be helpful in many occasions. Dark colors & mist The composer tried in this single work to give a musical expression to various significant moments from this novel. In the introduction he sketches an image of the dismal ambience on the island by using dark colors. Risingfragments of mist reveal the flanks of the monumental mountain Scataris. The composer tries to catch this image in a majestic and broad chorale. Away from Iceland Subsequently the ostinato rhythmicity and virtuosity representthe hectic descent of the crater of the volcano. The party descends ever more and more and travels south away from Iceland. On the way they see all kinds of rock formations fossils and minerals. At a depth of thirty hours walking distance atabout 150 kilometers below the surface they reach a sub terrestrial sea which is called the Lidenbrock sea. Genuine eruption of sounds Strange electric manifestations and unpredictable weather conditions accompany thissingular phenomenon. An orchestral tutti-episode expresses this impression musically. On a make-shift raft the party continues its voyage heading to the south coast of this huge sea. Once ashore an enormous rock obstructs the passage. The blowingup of this obstacle unleashes a genuine eruption of sounds in the orchestration. Spat out by the volcano But the explosion has an unforeseen side effect. The sea - travelers and raft included - is sucked upwards into a dark hole.Again our heroes are accompanied on their involuntary voyage while left to fend for themselves by an ever increasing ostinato rhythmicity. Before an irruption can destroy the raft the threesome manages to escape and climb up through acave towards the daylight. They seem to be spat out by the Stromboli volcano on the island of Sicily far from home. The composition ends with triumphant sounds that represent the scientific triumph of these adventurers.
