Four Short Prayers of Saint Francis of Assisi were introduced to Poulenc by his nephew Jerome, a Franciscan monk, who asked the composer to set them to music. Poulenc found these prayers very inspirational, as he was deeply moved spiritually and at the same time intimidated by the Saint's humility.Robert Kalwas has done a marvelous job arranging these four short works (timing is about 7-8 minutes) for a sextet or 6-part ensemble of Trombones. All parts are in bass clef. This arrangement will work nicely for moderately advanced.

“Saint Francis of Assisi is an Opera in three acts by Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992). Written in 1972 to 1983, it concerns the Catholic preacher, Saint Francis of Assisi, and displays the composer's devout Catholic faith. The third volume contains the complete third act of the Opera, comprising the final two scenes; Stigma, and Death and New Life. Despite his studies of Mozart and Wagner's operas, Messiaen vowed that he would never compose one himself, however, he was eventually convinced by the French president. After feeling unworthy to dramatise either Christ's Passion or Resurrection, he eventually chose to portray the life of Saint Francis of Assisi, whose life often reflected Christ's chastity, humility, poverty and suffering. This unique Opera by the individual Messiaen is a significant contribution to the repertoire, and was notably semi-staged as part of the BBC proms series in 2008.&rdquo.

Italy, Rome particularly, has been unfathomed source of inspiration for several compositions by Kai Nieminen (1953-), starting from his neo-impressionistic orchestral piece Vicoli in ombra (1995). Some twenty years later, in 2016 he wrote Frammenti dal buio... (inspirazioni Caravaggesche) for Trio la Rue. Basically, the work is combination of sacred and profane. Caravaggio, short story by Antonio Tabucchi and three paintings, Saint Francis in Prayer (1610), Saint Francis of Assisi in Ecstasy (1595), and Medusa (1597), all by Caravaggio, church bells, and a puppet theater near Villa Lante in Rome gave inspiration to the composer during the composition process. Trio la Rue gave the first performance on 26th October, 2016 at Villa Lante.

Three Sound-Poems after Paintings by Andreas Willscher (2017) are dedicated to organist Philip Hartmann and the art-loving community of the Pauluskirche in Ulm, Germany. The music is inspired by three paintings by German composer (and artist) Andreas Willscher (b. 1955). The pieces take their musical shapes and colors from the specific details of the paintings. The three paintings represent different styles: a landscape, a religious theme, and an abstract. The first movement, Sonnenfeld (Sun Field), is inspired by a bright painting of the sun illuminating the green field behind the composer's small house in Sainte-Radegonde (Dordogne/Perigord, France). A resplendent and majestic section of full sun harmonies surrounds a middle section with more motion. The second movement, Gebet des Hl. Franziskus (Prayer of St. Francis), is inspired by a painting showing St. Francis of Assisi in prayer. Francis has been a frequent theme in Willscher's music since his appointment at a young age as organist of St. Francis Church in Hamburg. The third movement, Laetare (Rejoice), is inspired by an vibrant abstract painting comprised of bold colors. The alternation of the blocks of rich color are mirrored in the block harmonic shifts in the movement, which is a moto perpetuo, building towards the organ's fullest sounds. Instrumentation: Organ Duration: 11' Composed: 2017 Published by: Zimbel Press.
