Nigel Hess

Nigel Hess's Jubilate Deo for SATB and organ was originally written for a production of Shakespeare’s Henry VIII at the Chichester Festival Theatre and accompanied the Christening and Coronation scenes in the play. It was originally recorded in Chichester Cathedral with its wonderful acoustic ideal for a grand Tudor ceremony. Even with more modest forces it is helpful to imagine this majestic sound and atmosphere. The Faber Choral Signature Series introduces a wealth of new or recently written choral music to choirs in search of fresh repertoire. The series draws in a richdiversity of living composers and includes both lighter and more challenging contemporary works offering a thrilling array of varied styles.

Commissioned in 1985 'East Coast Pictures' has become a modern classic for all wind bands. 'Shelter Island' is the first movement of the suite. The music conjures up a vivid picture of this small island moving from a crowded summer tourist trap to the onslaught of the Atlantic during the winter.

This theme tune from the BBC TV series Badger is available for pianists of moderate ability.

This pack compliments the standard symphonic wind band sets of parts for 'New York' one of the three movements from 'East Coast Pictures'.The extra parts include horns in E flat tenor trombones in treble clef bass trombone in bass clef (reading as B flat) and tubas in treble clef and E flat. Each pack also contains a transposing score.

East Coast Pictures originally written for wind band have now been transcribed by Phillip Littlemore introducing these exciting programmatic pieces to a wider audience. These three short ‘pictures’ were inspired by several visits by the composer to a small part of the USA’s East Coast an area that provides great extremes in the geography and the people. Shelter Island is a small island situated almost at the end of Long Island a few hours’ drive east of New York. In the summer it becomes a crowded tourist trap but in the winter it is gloriously deserted and bravely faces the onslaught of the turbulent Atlantic shrouded in sea mists anddriving rain. In upstate New York lie the Catskill Mountains an extraordinary combination of tranquillity and power peace and majesty. Once seen they call you back again and again. New York ...or to be precise Manhattan. For anyone who is familiar with this bizarre and wonderful city this ‘picture’ needs no explanation. For those not yet hooked here is a foretaste of things to come.

This brass band transcription has been made by Phillip Littlemore and provides a driving and punchy 4 minute work for brass band. 'New York' is the third movement of 'East Coast Pictures' originally written for wind band commissioned in 1985 by the British Youth Wind Orchestra with funds from National Westminster Bank plc.
