Tolomeo was Handel?s last opera for the Royal Academy of Music in London. Composed between March and 19 April 1728 it was premiered on 30 April. Handel revived the opera several times further: in 1730 in an extensive revision with seven performances and in 1733 with four performances.The historical background is the dispute between Cleopatra III and her younger son Ptolemaio X Alexander I ( Tolomeo ). In 110 BC Cleopatra drove Tolomeo out of Egypt. She died irreconciled to him in 101 BC.The new vocal score is based on the ?Halle Handel Edition?. The main part contains the version from the premiere. The opera ?Na s? was premiered on 22 April 1749 at the Académie royale in the Palais-Royal Paris in celebration of the signing of the so-called Treaty of Aachen. It was revived again in August 1764 shortly before Rameau?s death and achieved great success as the ?opera of peace ? even though it did not appear in print during the composer?s lifetime.In numerous arias Rameau provides his singers ample opportunity to shine while he reveals his orchestral mastery in particular in the chaconne and the various other ballets.The work appears here for the first time in a vocal score with a keyboard reduction. The reduction is by François Saint-Yves on the basis ofthe new critical edition by Pascal Denécheau which is part of Opera Omnia Rameau edited by Sylvie Bouissou.This edition is the result of a meticulous comparison of all known musical sources. Langgaard was an eminent musical talent but with his romantic and symbolist view of art he ended up as an outsider in an era when the trend-setting musical life of the time was permeated by Carl Nielsen's sober and modern attitude. Rued Langgaard's production within the lied genre comprises125 songs. Half of them were composed in the short span of years between 1914 and 1918 when the composer was in his early twenties.With this publication in three volumes Langgaard's important and personal contribution to the genre is presented in its entire range. Only 27 of the songs have previously been published. The songs are set to German Danish and Norwegian poems. The poems in Danish and Norwegian are included in an English translation (though not designed for performance purposes). Each volume is accompanied by an introduction source descriptions and a critical apparatus in Danish and English.
