Violin Sonata in A Major

Violin Sonata in G major-Inspired by Béla Bartók’s Violin sonatas Ravel planned his own sonata for Violin and Piano in 1922 but at first did not get beyond sketches. Many interruptions ensued and the work was onlyfinished in 1927. He dedicated it to his violinist friend Hélène Jourdan-Morhange. Regarding the sonata’s sparse thinned out compositional structure and instrumentation Ravel later emphasized thatthe sonata proved the tonal incompatibility of the Violin and Piano. Yet it still succeeded in winning a permanent place in Violin repertoire – not least because of its middle movement inspired by jazz elements and the“blues”. The fingerings in this Henle Urtext edition have been provided by two masters of their instruments: Christian Tetzlaff and Pascal Rogé.

Sonata no.2 in d minor op.121 for Violin and Piano-Schumann?s second violin sonata was written in October/November 1851 only a few weeks after the first work for this combination of instruments (HN 428). The highly virtuosic sonata especially in the finale is characterised bythe close thematic dovetailing of the single movements. Wilhelm Joseph von Wasielewski who later became the composer?s biographer reported that ?smiling in his kind-hearted manner? the composer had said to him: ?I did not likethe first violin sonata; so I then wrote a second one which is hopefully better.? Schumann was apparently referring to the great differences in the expressive content: Whereas the first sonata with three movements seems rathermelancholy and dark overall the second ?Great Sonata? with four movements is bursting with energy and ends in vibrant D major.

The second half of the 19th century represented something of a ?Golden Age? of the violin sonata in France: influential violin sonatas such as those by Franck, Fauré and Saint-Saëns were among the successful works of this genre, inspiring many further compositions. Saint-Saëns? Violin Sonata No.2 was written in 1896 during a stay of several months by the composer in Egypt: he began the main themes of all four movements as well as the canonic trio in Luxor and Aswan. The sonata was then completed on the Nile journey back to Cairo. That same year the sonata was premiered by Saint-Saëns and Pablo Sarasate in a concert celebrating the composer?s fiftieth stage anniversary. Astoundingly, he had first appeared on stage when he was only ten years old. Grieg?s third Violin Sonata is one of his major creations and stands alongside the sonatas of Johannes Brahms and César Franck at the pinnacle of late nineteenth century chamber music. One small measure of the work?srenown is its occurrence in Thomas Mann?s novel 'Doktor Faustus'. The sonata has been growing more popular ever since its first publication and it is now high time for it to appear in an urtext edition from Henle. The vast majority of violin sonatas from Vivaldi?s time including those of Vivaldi himself have come down to us in the form of a score employing two staves: one for violin and one for bass. This guarantees that although portions of the work may be missing what survives is textually complete. Exceptionally five of Vivaldi?s violin sonatas are preserved solely in a partbook for violin held by the Diözesanarchiv Graz the complementary part for cello having disappeared. The sonatas appear to date from the period between the Dresden group (1716-1717) and the Manchester set (c. 1726). Three of the sonatas which all have four movements possess partial concordances in other sources with which they share two or three movements but two of them ? RV 11 and RV 37 ? have so far been found only in Graz (with the exception of an incipit for RV 11 found in a contemporary thematic catalogue). This critical edition makes these two works available for study and performance. The bass part is an editorial reconstruction and there is in addition a realization of the continuo by the editor.

The fame of the prodigy Wolfgang Amadeus had already reached her so that she had an extraordinary desire to see this child (according to Leopold Mozart). The Sonatas for Piano K. 26-31 that can also have a violin accompaniment were composed in The Hague. They were published in 1766 and were naturally dedicated to the princess. An early copy which has nothing to do with Mozart was consulted by the New Mozart Edition as a primary source alongside the first edition. Three Trio Sonatas for Two Violins (Flutes) and Bc Op.5 HWV 397 398 401The three Trio Sonatas in this edition were taken from the sonata collection published in London by John Walsh in 1739. Since hardly any chamber music compositions have come down to us from Handel’s later years other than the well-known D major Violin Sonata these Trio Sonatas can be considered as one of Handel’s last contributions to the field of instrumental chamber music.The first edition specifies two Violins or Flutes as melody instruments for the Op.5 Sonatas. However since scoring indications particularly in instrumentalchamber music were taken very liberally at that time it is alsoperfectly legitimate to play these works in other instrumental combinations (for example Violin and Flute).
