Klavierauszug-The Romance for Violin and Orchestra No. 1 in G major was written in 1802 and published in 1803 as opus 40 while the earlier Romance for Violin and Orchestra No. 2 in F major was written in1798 but not published until 1805 as opus 50 leading to some confusion as to the actual chronology. Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 1827) was a German composer and pianist and arguably the most famous composer ofall time. He was the last great figure of the Classical era and helped pave the way for the Romantic style that followed. The remarkable results of this undertaking are the concertos for harpsichord. Today it is almost certain that practically all of these concertos were transcribed from concertos for melody instruments (mostly violin or oboe).The Concerto in F major BWV 1052 is the sixth of the harpsichord concertos contained in the autograph score that Bach wrote out in or around 1738 (Berlin Staatsbibliothek Mus. ms. Bach P 234). The initials at the end of the piece SDGl ('Soli Deo Gloria') form a pendant to the J.J. ('Jesus Juva') found at theopening of the D-minor Concerto BWV 1052. This indicates that BVW 1057 formed the final piece in this six-work opus the only authentic and self-contained collection of concertos we have from Bach apart from his presentation copy of the Brandenburg Concertos (1721). If in his concertos for solo instrument and orchestra Saint-Saëns freed himself from the Viennese classical model (reconfiguring it with originality but in the light certainly of the formal experimentations of Schumann and of Biedermeier virtuosity) in the Romance opus 37 and other works of similar form (opus 27 36 and 48) he adopted the Romantic ternary Liedform (A–B–A) – in particular that of Schumann’s Stücke and Mendelssohn’s Lieder ohne Worte – and transcended the idiomaticity of the respective solo instruments nowinterchangeable ad libitum (Flute or Violin in the case of opus 37) thereby making the pieces more widely usable and emphasizing their cantabile quality.
