Par BAY WILLIAM. This is a collection of 155 solos for trumpet, cornet, or flugelhorn. Ninety-one were recorded on various trumpets, 37 were recorded on cornet and 27 on flugelhorn. One hundred and fourteen are original compositions and the remaining 41 are arrangements on favorite hymns and sacred songs. A warm-up study is also included. This compilation comprises 6 books; Trumpet Chants; Trumpet Tone Poems, Trumpet Ballads and Waltzes, Trumpet Partitas, Soliloquies for Flugelhorn, Trumpet or Cornet, and Hymns for Unaccompanied Trumpet. Many of the pieces have been revised and new ones have been added. Each book was recorded with a different instrument although Trumpet Ballads and Waltzes and Trumpet Partitas were both recorded with a cornet. However, a different mouthpiece was used for each of those two recordings, thus giving each a slightly different sound. Both the instrument and the mouthpiece used are noted on the title page of each section. Most of the selections are aimed at developing tone and lyricism on the trumpet. However, Trumpet Partitas definitely addresses technical issues. There is a wealth of music in this collection, and it will add much to trumpet practice and performance repertoire. Suite is a piece for three Bb or C Trumpets composed by Henri Tomasi in 1964. This unusual suite lasts approximately 8’30 minutes. It is divided into three main parts: 1. Havanaise at a Tempo di Habanera 2. Lento égéen and 3. Danse Bolivienne. The Havanaise is made of a danse part and a more melodious one. Its dialogue in between the Trumpets creates a counterpoint. In the second part the three instruments alternate the theme with small variations and the last part “3. Danse Bolivienne” is a toccata. This book features score and parts for Bb and C Trumpets. HenriTomasi was a French composer conductor and winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1927. He also composed a variety of concerti for Alto Saxophone and for Trombone as well as some ballades.

Dialogue by Eug̬ne Bozza is a piece for two Trumpets lasting three minutes. Sounding really majestic this work exhibits the two Trumpets having an exchange like a dialogue. The piece is divided into three movements: Allegro Mastoso (4/4 tempo 120) РModerato (4/4 tempo 80) РTempo di Marcha (2/4 tempo 120). This piece is a great work to play during a recital. Eug̬ne Bozza won different prizes at the Conservatoire de Paris such as the First Prizes for the Violin conducting and composition as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He composed several operas chamber works andballets among others.

It contains a large selection of Etudes for solo Trumpet at Intermediate/Advanced level first published around 1850. Ernst Sachse (1813-1870) was a German composer publisher and virtuosic Trumpeter and Trombonist. He performed as both a soloist and in orchestras in Weimar London Leipzig and Holland. He composed several concertos and concertinos for Bass and Tenor Trombones and also wrote for orchestra and band. Best known today are probably his pedagogical works which are still used in many academies and conservatories.
