Fanfare for Korea was commissioned by the first Korea International Concert band Festival, which took place in 2010, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Korean War. In this triumphant fanfare, composer Jacob de Haan uses the melody of Arirang, the most popular folk song in Korea. The Korea Festival Concert band performed the première at the festival, conducted by de Haan himself.

Fanfare for Korea is gecomponeerd in opdracht van het eerste Korea International Wind Band Festival. Dit festival vond plaats in 2010. Zestig jaar eerder brak in juni 1950 de oorlog uit in Korea. Ter gelegenheid van de herdenkinghiervan schreef Jacob de Haan deze compositie. In deze fanfare verwerkte hij de melodie van Arirang, het populairste en bekendste volkslied van Korea. Het Korea Festival Wind Orchestra verzorgde in Seoel de première tijdenshet festival onder leiding van Jacob de Haan zelf.

Fanfare for Korea wurde im Auftrag des 1. Koreanischen Internationalen Blasorchester-Festivals, das anlässlich des 60-jährigen Gedenkens an den Korea-Krieg stattfand, in Auftrag gegeben. Jacob de Haan verarbeitete in seinem Werk die Melodie von Arirang, dem beliebtesten und bekanntesten Volkslied Koreas. Das Korea Festival Orchestra sorgte während des Festivals in Seoul für die Uraufführung unter der Leitung von Jacob de Haan. Beim Abschlusskonzert in der Kriegs-Gedenkstätte wurde das Werk vom Asian Wind Orchestra unter der Leitung von Dennis Johnson gespielt.

The theme of the inauguration was Saint Mary's: A Sign of Faith, Hope, & Knowledge. The fanfare is based on the hymn tune Melita, more commonly known as the Navy Hymn, Eternal Father, Strong to Save, with the text My hope is built on nothing less ... serving as the inspiration for the piece. The opening brass fanfare features the uplifting first notes of the tune transitioning into a legato treatment for the woodwinds and horns. The theme builds as the brass and percussion eventually return leading back to the original fanfare. The music ends triumphantly with the entire ensemble joining in celebration.

Sinfonia and Caprice is comprised of two contrasting sections. Both sections are characterised by the arrangement of the eight voices into two four-part groups that play in dialogue with each other.The first, slow movement is a Sinfonia in the baroque sense?a majestic opening work. With its dotted rhythms and semiquaver runs, the movement is reminiscent of a French overture. The fast second movement, the Caprice, features an almost unbroken galloping rhythm. In this section an energetic main theme in a minor key plays in alternation with a lyrical subsidiary major theme. The work closes with a triumphant fanfare.

Het werk Sinfonia and Caprice bestaat uit twee contrasterende gedeelten. Het arrangement van beide delen wordt gekenmerkt door de verdeling van de acht partijen in twee groepen van vier, die in dialoog met elkaar spelen.Het eerste, langzame deel is een majestueuze sinfonia in barokke sfeer. Met zijn gepunteerde ritmes en loopjes van zestiende noten doet dit deel denken aan een Franse ouverture. Het snelle twee deel, de caprice, omvat een bijna onafgebroken galopritme. In dit deel wordt een energiek hoofdthema in mineur afgewisseld door een lyrisch ondergeschikt thema in majeur. De compositie wordt afgesloten met een glorierijke fanfare.

Sinfonia and Caprice besteht aus zwei kontrastierenden Teilen. Typisch für beide Teile ist die Aufteilung der acht Stimmen in zwei vierstimmige Gruppen, die miteinander im Dialog stehen.Der erste, langsame Satz ist eine Sinfonia im barocken Sinne, also ein majestätisches Eröffnungsstück. Mit seinen punktierten Rhythmen und Sechzehntelfolgen erinnert der Satz im Charakter an eine französische Ouvertüre. Der schnelle zweite Teil, die Caprice, weist einen fast unablässig durchlaufenden Galopp-Rhythmus auf. In diesem Satz wechselt sich ein markiertes Hauptthema in Moll mit einem lyrischen Seitenthema in Dur ab. Das Werk endet mit einem fanfarenartigen,triumphalen Schluss.

This fanfare celebrates the students themselves, and their acheivement of completing their first year of musical studies. After a breif introduction by the entire percussion ensemble, the winds enter with a stately theme with martial accompaniment. A contrasting section features the woodwinds playing a tender melody before the percussion brings back the intial theme and ending the piece triumphantly.

Cosmic Expedition takes performers on a musical journey far across the galaxy via three main sections.  This fanfare composition would be perfect for opening a concert. It has bold brass fanfare figures over textural woodwinds to start and then takes the listener on a sonic journey through a variation of harmonic colors, tambural and textural shifts.
Cosmic Expedition takes performers on a musical journey far across the galaxy via three main sections. The first, a rather celebratory and triumphant fanfare in Bb major begins with the upper woodwinds and percussion creating a sound-screen, that is a busy texture consisting of a flurry of repeated notes over which the horns and alto saxophones present the opening theme. The sound-screen should be carefully balanced and give way to the melody at m. 5, which should be played extremely marcato. The timpani solo beginning in m. 11 must not be understated. A brief percussion interlude separates a restatement of the opening theme, this time with the addition of the trumpet, tenor saxophone, and euphonium, and a counter melody by the low winds. The percussion interlude is playful, light, but full of vigor and energy. An Ab in the low winds pulls the harmony towards G minor in m. 40 to start the second section, a more serious fanfare. Here, the marimba repeats an ostinato that is complemented by the bass drum and woodblock. The upper woodwinds with the xylophone and snare drum dance over the stern secondary fanfare. A longing call lead by the trombones, interrupted by a subtle snare drum beckons to the clarinets and horn who begin the third section of the piece at m. 68. This haunting melody in C minor is legato, and starkly contrasts all which came before it. A relentless concert tom-tom played with hard mallets keeps the momentum persistent, and a heartbeat-like pulse is felt from the tuba and baritone saxophone. The melody rises towards m. 84 when the brass harken back to the fanfare style before fading back into another lush woodwind strain.A recapitulation of the low winds’ call is heard at m. 100 which in this occasion intensifies into an emphatic statement by the battery percussion instruments. Now in Eb major, the opening fanfare theme is heard again once more before fading into the beginning of the piece’s conclusion.To end, the counter melody from the opening section duels with chromatic tension above before swelling to an arrival in the original key of Bb major. The full ensemble celebrates the piece’s resolution, and after a few crunchy power chords the journey is completed.
