9 Trio Sonatas Op. 2, No. 1

Par MOZART WOLFGANG AMADEUS. Since their publication in the New Mozart Edition, Mozart's sonatas K. 10–15 count as piano trios. Furthermore, the title of the first edition, published by father and son Mozart in 1765 reads 'Six Sonates pour le Clavecin qui puevent se jouer avec l'accompagnement de Violon ou Flaute Traversiere”. In other words, these pieces are harpsichord sonatas that may be accompanied at will by a violin or a transverse flute. In a partial press run of the first edition a cello part was included. Our new edition is the first to take these conflicting formats into account by presenting two separate versions, one being the unaltered harpsichord part, the other a full score with separateinstrumental parts for violin/flute and cello. The harpsichord part [CV 51. 010/10] is indeed capable of standing by itself and requires no instrumental expansion. The melody instrument, in contrast, merely function as an accompaniment or contribute brief interjections, or, in the case of the cello, reinforce the left hand of the keyboard. In other words, K. 10–15 are not only Mozart's earliest piano trios, they are also his earliest keyboard sonatas to survive intact./ Répertoire / Violon, Violoncelle et Piano

Playing Score.Like no other musician of his time did Johann Mattheson (1681-1764) succeed in assimilating the musical knowledge of the 18th century in his writings.However Mattheson's theoretical writings were grounded on a solid practical experience of which these Sonatas for 3 Treble Recorders offer a superb practical example.Of medium difficulty they contain a rich and colourful array of movements ideal for study and play.

Sonata in D major TWV 41:D9 - Sonata in G major TWV 41:G9-These three editions (BA 5880 BA 5889 BA 5890) each comprising two solo sonatas with basso continuo are all taken from Telemann’s famous Essercizii musici; a collection of 24 sonatas including 12 solo sonatas and 12 trio sonatas. These were moulded after Corelli’s Sonata da Chiesa and have four movements: slow-fast-slow-fast. The sonatas long thought to stem from the late 1730s are now believed to have first been published by the composer in approx. 1729. The main sources are the three part-books from the original edition of 1729.This first ever Urtext edition edited by the Bach and Telemann scholar Klaus Hofmann is taken from the Telemann Musical Works. Sonaten op. 1: Nr. 1 4 und 9 op. 3: Nr. 2 4 und 12. Very few works in music history have been associated with the phrase 'epoch-making' yet Arcangelo Corelli's Trio Sonatas are among them. In 1681 and 1685 with the composition of Sonate da chiesa Op. 1 and Sonate da camera Op. 2 Corelli laid the foundation for a genre which was to be the chamber music format for almost 100 years. It was only in 1781 that it was superseded by Joseph Haydn's String Quartets Op. 33 which were also highly significant to the era. From a historical point of view the String Quartet can be viewed as a 'child' of the trio sonata. As a result Wiener Urtext Edition have published a selection of 12 of a total of 48 trio sonatas due to the 300th anniversary of the composer's death. Volume 1 contains six sonatas of the Da Chiesa model Volume 2 six pieces of the Da Camera type. This new edition was based on original editions the first Italian reprints as well as the Rogers Amsterdam edition. In addition to parts for the melodic instruments the new edition also contains a Continuo score with realised easily playable Basso Continuo. This edition is perfectly suitable as an introduction into chamber music.

Three Trio Sonatas for Two Violins (Flutes) and Bc Op.5 HWV 397 398 401The three Trio Sonatas in this edition were taken from the sonata collection published in London by John Walsh in 1739. Since hardly any chamber music compositions have come down to us from Handel’s later years other than the well-known D major Violin Sonata these Trio Sonatas can be considered as one of Handel’s last contributions to the field of instrumental chamber music.The first edition specifies two Violins or Flutes as melody instruments for the Op.5 Sonatas. However since scoring indications particularly in instrumentalchamber music were taken very liberally at that time it is alsoperfectly legitimate to play these works in other instrumental combinations (for example Violin and Flute).

Scheibe’s three sonatas for flute (or violin) and obbligato harpsichord were published by Haffner in the late 1750’s but were probably composed much earlier; they contain a significant quantity of elaborate imitative writing that is out of character with Scheibe’s later music. Although rooted in the same tradition as the sonatas for flute and obbligato harpsichord by J.S. Bach C.P.E Bach and composers at Berlin court of Frederick the Great these are more substantial works each having four movements in the traditional slow-fast-slow-fast scheme. For the most part they are trio sonatas the right hand of the harpsichord acting as the secondtreble voice but several movements feature idiomatic writing for the keyboard. Also interesting is the large amount of ornamentation called for particularly in the harpsichord part. While Scheibe disapproved of the excessive embellishments that Bach actually wrote into his melody lines these sonatas are nonetheless heavily ornamented albeit through the insertion of notational symbols; in addition to turns and mordents Scheibe uses no less than three different trill symbols!
