Based on source material from the archive of the Netherlands Music Institute in The Hague, this newly-engraved reconstruction of the Trio No. 1, Op. 51 by Benoit Tranquille Berbiguier for Three Flutes includes a full score and all three parts. Berbiguier is primarily known for his methods and small ensembles for flutes composed during and after his education at the National Conservatory of Music in Paris. The original edition from the archives, published by French publisher Janet and Cotelle, c. 1820, contains only three parts with no score. While the original aim was to assemble a full score while recreating the individual parts faithfully, editorial decisions were made throughout tocorrect many serious inconsistencies between the parts, especially regarding articulations and dynamics, and even including differences in tempo markings. The resulting standardized, consistent editions should allow students and teachers more effective - and more efficient - learning and instruction. Par HAYDN BEETHOVEN KUHLAU. Au delà des anecdotes liées à la vie de chacun de ces trois compositeurs, intéressons-nous davantage aux liens qu'a pu, tout au long de sa vie, entretenir Ludwig van Beethoven, de loin le plus emblématique des trois, avec les deux autres. Lien de filiation quant à Haydn, qui fut un temps son prefesseur, et lien de paternité quant à Kuhlau, qui ne cacha jamais son admiration pour le maître de Bonn et dont les compositions lui ont fait à juste titre gagner le qualificatif de ' Beethoven de la flûte ', bien qu'il ne fût lui-même jamais flûtiste ! Dans le Trios de Londres de Haydn tout autant que dans le Grand Trio de Beethoven, l'utilisation de la flûte alto en troisième voix nous paraît particulièrement pertinente. En effet, l'un comme l'autre de ces deux trios sont écrits pour deux instruments identiques et un troisième différent (deux flûtes and cello pour le Haydn - deux flûtes and cor anglais pour le Beethoven). Le timbre caractéristique de la flûte alto, et qui n'est définitivement pas le même que celui de la grande flûte, nous a ainsi semblé faire mieux écho aux orchestrations originales. / Niveau : Fin Cycle 2 / Répertoire / 3 Flûtes Traversières

Commissioned by the sound festival for The Scottish Flute Trio. First performance: November 13 2008. Duff House Banff Scotland. In this work all three players in turn play each of the three instruments - piccolo flute and alto flute - thus giving a contrasted sound to match the character of the four linked movements: hence the title. Sleepy using all three alto flutes begins on the lowest note - G. The mood gradually changes as they introduce higher pitches and faster rhythms as they 'wake up'. In Lyrical a flute introduces the melody which is then shared by a second flute and later by the alto flute. With Mischievous the piccolos arrive on the scene. The first oneincites another piccolo and then the flute to join in. The tempo quickens and after a brief climax the mood quietens leading to Peaceful. In this last movement all three instruments are played. In turn they present a lyrical melody but in different keys so as to suit their individual tessituras.
