Bach: Complete Organ Works Vol. 5 Sonatas / Trios / Concertos - ed. by Pieter Dirksen Organ Works Based on Compositions by Bach and Others Genres such as sonata, trio and concerto were initially uncommon in the keyboard music of the early 18th century. Thus it comes as no surprise that many of the pieces in this volume are arrangements by Bach of original compositions and of works by other composers. Next to the Sonatas BWV 525?530 and the Concertos or concerto movements based on pieces by other composers BWV 592?596, the volume also contains the Trio in D minor BWV 583, the Trio settings BWV 585?587 as well as the early versions of BWV 527 and 528. Moreover, the CD-ROM offers eight arrangements of trio movements by Bach made by others. In his detailed introduction, Pieter Dirksen discusses various aspects of these pieces' origins, inasmuch as they help us better understand the works. The organist will especially welcome the comments on performance practice and registration. It is precisely the fact that these works derive from chamber-music models that leads to individual considerations for each work group.

L'éditeur Jacques Durand, qui avait publié quelques années auparavant le célèbre Trio de Ravel, suggère en 1922 à Fauré d'écrire un trio, qui sera son avant-dernière partition. Le compositeur ne dépasse tout d'abord pas le stade de quelques esquisses et réfléchit un temps à mettre une clarinette à la place du violon. Ce n'est que durant son séjour estival à Annecy-le-Vieux en Savoie qu'il réussit à composer l'Andantino, mouvement central élégiaque d'une ampleur inhabituelle. Suivent les premier et troisième mouvements qu'il écrit durant l'hiver suivant, à Paris. L'édition Urtext de ce morceau de maturité aux contours et aux lignes claires, qui offre un bel équilibre entre le piano et les instruments à cordes, représente un ajout de poids dans le catalogue de musique française de G. Based on source material from the archive of the Netherlands Music Institute in The Hague, this newly-engraved reconstruction of the Trio No. 1, Op. 51 by Benoit Tranquille Berbiguier for Three Flutes includes a full score and all three parts. Berbiguier is primarily known for his methods and small ensembles for flutes composed during and after his education at the National Conservatory of Music in Paris. The original edition from the archives, published by French publisher Janet and Cotelle, c. 1820, contains only three parts with no score. While the original aim was to assemble a full score while recreating the individual parts faithfully, editorial decisions were made throughout tocorrect many serious inconsistencies between the parts, especially regarding articulations and dynamics, and even including differences in tempo markings. The resulting standardized, consistent editions should allow students and teachers more effective - and more efficient - learning and instruction.
