The work, originally titled Berchtolsgader-Musik, goes back to the Cassatio ex G by Leopold Mozart, whose movements 3, 4 and 7 are identical to the Kinder-Symphonie [Children's Symphony]. For a long time, the authorship of the work was uncertain. It was attributed to Joseph Haydn and his brother Michael, at times also to Edmund Angerer and Leopold Mozart's pupil Johann Rainprechter. The work probably first received the designation Kinder-Symphonie in 1813 through an edition by the music publisher Hofmeister. In the Children's Symphony, a cuckoo, a quail and other unusual instruments are used in addition to the usual orchestral scoring. These belong to the Berchtesgaden instruments: flutes, whistles and rattles carved from wood, manufactured in the Berchtesgaden region and widely used as children's toys throughout the country. Today, these instruments can also be replaced by flutes, whistles as well as ratchets, rattles or bell trees. The piano versions of the Children's Symphony have been part of Breitkopf's orchestral materials for over a hundred years now. They are not merely piano parts, however, but full-blooded reductions for piano twohands or four-hands.

Composed by Telemann as a double concerto for recorder and transverse flute, Zart Dombourian-Eby’s new edition is prepared for piccolo, flute, and piano — remaining compatible with available orchestral editions, and respectfully faithful to Telemann’s detailed nuances. Cast in the slow-fast, slow-fast four-movement mold typical of Baroque concert works, the CONCERTO IN E MINOR is at once among the most beautiful and exhilarating works of Telemann’s formidable output.______________________________________Text from the scanned back cover:ZART DOMBOURIAN-EBY is the Principal Piccoloist of the SeattleSymphony and is regularly featured as both a soloist and clinician in Seattle and across the world. Her performances consistently receive highest praise from both critics and audiences. A native of New Orleans, she received B.A. and M.M. degrees from Louisiana State University. After a year of study with Albert Tipton she attended Northwestern University earning a Doctor of Music degree under the tutelage of Walfrid Kujala. She has been a member of the New Orleans Pops, Baton Rouge Symphony, Colorado Philharmonic, and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. She has performed with the Chicago Symphony and served on the faculties of the University of Washington and Pacific Lutheran University. She was the founding editor of Flute Talk and ison the Editorial Board for The Flutist Quarterly. Zart is the immediate past president of the National Flute Association, and been a featured soloist and presenter at numerous NFA conventions. Zart has commissioned numerous works, including two for piccolo and piano by Martin Amlin, sonatas by Gary Schocker and Levente Gyongyosi, and a chamber work by Ken Benshoof. She can be heard in over 100 recordings by the Seattle Symphony, and her solo CD, in shadow, light, is available on Crystal Records. Her award-winning edition of the three Vivaldi piccolo concertos is published by Theodore Presser.A native of Seattle, VALERIE SHIELDS received her B.M. summa cum laude in organ and violin from St. Olaf College. While completing her M.M. from Northwestern University, she became increasingly interested and skilled in the art of improvisation. She served as Director of Music at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Park Ridge, Illinois, where she developed a music program involving over 150 participants in choirs and chamber music groups.Upon her return to Seattle, she served for 12 years as director of adivision of the Northwest Girlchoir. She became organist and developed a vibrant Youth Choir at Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church, where she served for over 30 years, as well as enjoying a 20-year tenure as Music Director and Composer-in-Residence of Temple De Hirsch Sinai. Valerie’s work with children’s choirs, churches, and synagogues has inspired over 100 published compositions. When I was invited to perform a Vivaldi piccolo concerto in Italy a few years ago, my host, Luisa Sello, wrote that Carol Wincenc was going to be on the same concert, and was there any piece that we could play together? I looked and asked around, and my colleague Joanna Bassett recommended the Telemann Concerto in E Minor for Traverso and Recorder. I didn’t know the piece, but as I listened to a recording of it, I immediately loved it and could easily envision how beautifully it could work, with a few “adjustments,” for flute and piccolo. I got to work, and the current publication is the result. I have performed it many times, and enjoy it even more every time. It fits a unique place in our repertoire, and works equally well with piano as with the string orchestra setting.According to Steven D. Zohn, pre-eminent Telemann scholar, and author of Music for a Mixed Taste: Style, Genre, and Meaning in Telemann’s Instrumental Works, much is unknown about the concerto itself; it likely dates from the 1720s, soon after Telemann moved to Hamburg. Only an eighteenth-century copyist’s set of parts is extant, that of Johann Samuel Endler, who was engaged at the Darmstadt court as a singer and violinist, later becoming Vice-Kapellmeister and Kapellmeister, and who had a large collection of Telemann’s works. As in my Vivaldi concertos edition (Presser 414-41190), I have added virtually all of the articulations and dynamics that appear here, and have inserted quite a bit of ornamentation. Unlike the Vivaldi edition, I have not included any indication of the original Telemann in those passages, nor have I included any pedagogical markings, such as fingerings. Finally, I would like to acknowledge, with gratitude, Joanna Bassett, Daniel Dorff, Benton Gordon, Evan Pengra-Sult, Sandra Saathoff, Valerie Shields, Carol Wincenc, and Steven Zohn, for the various roles they played in the making of this publication.— Zart Dombourian-EbyJune 2018.

The Lost Words by composer James Burton takes its inspiration and text from the award-winning 'cultural phenomenon' and book of the same name by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris: a book that was, in turn, a creative response to the removal of everyday nature words like acorn, newt and otter from a new edition of a widely used children's dictionary. Both the book and Burton's 32-minute work, which is written in 12 short movements for upper-voice choir in up to 3 voice parts (with either orchestral or piano accompaniment), celebrates each lost word with a beautiful poem or 'spell', magically brought to life in Burton's music. At its heart, the work delivers a powerful message about the need to close the gap between childhood and the natural world. Burton's piece was co-commissioned by the Hallé Concerts Society for the Hallé Children's Choir and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The piano accompaniment version was premiered at the Tanglewood Festival in 2019 by the Boston Symphony Children's Choir, of which Burton is founder and director. The Hallé Children's Choir will premiere the orchestral version of the full work in Manchester, UK, post-pandemic.

Mahler composed his 3rd Symphony in the summers of 1893 and 1894 in Steinbach on the Attersee near Salzburg. He spent most of his days those two summers composing in a tiny hut built to his specifications where he could compose in the meadow on the shore of the lake - undisturbed. Movement 5, What The Morning Bell Tells Me includes the voices of women's chorus, children and alto soloist and is a relatively short 4-minute bright rowdy episode, full of laughing voices, bells and angels. Ohad Wand arranged this great music for 12-part Trombone Choir while studying at the Eastman School and it was subsequently beautifully recorded by the Eastman Trombone Choir, directed by Dr. John Marcellus.

Chaconne (2016), for string quartet, was commissioned by the Daedalus Quartet to celebrate its 15th anniversary. The commission was supported by New Music USA, made possible by annual program support and/or endowment gifts from Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Helen F. Whitaker Fund, and Aaron Copland Fund for Music. My music has a substantial history with Daedalus. I composed the Third String Quartet (2008) for them, and subsequently they performed my three string quartets on several occasions and recorded them brilliantly on Bridge Records (Bridge 9352: Music of Fred Lerdahl, vol. 3). Chaconne is in one movement lasting 19 minutes. It is effectively my fourth string quartet. Quartets 1-3 form a unified cycle lasting 70 minutes. When I finished the cycle, I thought I would never write again for the medium; yet I could not resist the opportunity of working again with Daedalus. The issue was how to compose another string quartet unrelated to the earlier cycle. The solution came from my solo cello piece There and Back Again (2010), which was based on a four-bar variation pattern from a 17th-century chaconne. Unlike the asymmetrical phrases and expanding variations of much of my music, the chaconne form requires symmetrical phrases and strictly periodic variations. I wished to work again with these symmetries but on a larger scale. Chaconne also differs in character and expression from the three-quartet cycle. The cycle is inward and intense, a kind of psychological excavation. Chaconne is, for the most part, transparent and playful. Many of its textures emerge from little canons, not completely unlike the rounds that children sing. Any composer who writes in chaconne form (one thinks above all of the last movement of Bach's D minor violin partita and the finale of Brahms's Fourth Symphony) is confronted with the challenge of how to create a larger form out of a constantly repeating pattern. My Chaconne grows from paired antecedent-consequent phrases, each variation lasting eight bars. The 50 variations group into three large rotations, forming three arcs of tension and relaxation, with subtle parallel connections across the rotations. Notwithstanding my attraction to chaconne form, I purposefully disguised its symmetries and periodicities in order to build an overall dramatic shape. Fred Lerdahl.
