On the 200th anniversary of Robert Schumann's birth, an ambitious project is coming to a close: For the first time since Clara Schumann's Complete Edition of 1879–93, all of the works for piano solo are appearing as one editorial project. Spanning almost ten years of painstaking work, all of the Schumann titles published by G. Henle Publishers have undergone a careful revision. The Schumann expert Ernst Herttrich has closely examined each edition and also dedicated himself to those works that were previously missing from our catalogue. Arranged clearly according to opus numbers, it includes not only all of Schumann's piano works, revised to reflect the latest scholarly findings, but also informative accompanying texts, alternative versions and much more besides. Contents: Faschingsschwank aus Wien op. 26; 3 Romanzen op. 28; Scherzo, Gigue, Romanze und Fughette op. 32; Album für die Jugend op. 68 ; Vier Fugen op. 72; Vier Märsche op. 76; Waldszenen op. 82.

Bach was not able to use the Weimar Advent cantata Argre dich, o Seele, nicht BWV 186a in Leipzig, as there was no performance of church music there between the 1st Sunday of Advent and Christmas. Bach expanded and revised the cantata during his first year in Leipzig and performed it for the first time in its new form on the 7th Sunday after Trinity 1723. Only a wordbook survives from the original Weimar form of the work. Starting from the Weimar wordbook and Bach's Leipzig score, Diethard Hellmann has created a reconstruction of Bach's sole known cantata for the 3rd Sunday of Advent. Bach's Leipzig version of the cantata is available separately (Carus 31.186/50). Score available separately - see item CA.3118600.

Following the great success of this musical in German, it is now also available in English. Everything seems to be going wrong at Circus Allegro. Bruno the Bear refuses to appear on stage, his assistant, Bella Stella, has disappeared, and finally, even the tiger escapes! Circus director Ricardo Grande has to improvise constantly. Luckily, his new assistant, clumsy August the Clown, always has a brilliant idea just at the right time. Despite all mishaps, the audience gets to experience a splendid circus evening. And in the middle of all the excitement, the tiger and Bella suddenly reappear. The audience is swept off its feet. Wherever the world-famous Circus Allegro appears, audiences shed tears of joy and are enchanted - visually, acoustically and emotionally. The individual numbers of this children's musical are composed in different styles and the songs can be performed either with an orchestra or just with a piano. This scholarly-critical volume is the first published edition of Meyerbeer's Clarinet Quintet, which vanished in World War ll and only recently resurfaced in the estate of the clarinetist Carl Bärmann. Meyerbeer wrote the piece in Vienna in 1813 for his friend Heinrich Bärmann, a celebrated clarinettist to whom C. M. von Weber also dedicated several works. The extremely novel and virtuoso handling of the clarinet was unusual for its day: Meyerbeer allows it to stand out clearly from the string ensemble and pushes it to the utmost limits of its technique. The Work enriched the meager chamber music repertoire for the clarinet in the 19th century. Our scholarly-critical edition makes this masterpiece available to performers for the first time in print. Besides the musical text, it offers a critical report and a detailed preface discussing the work's genesis. The parts have been given performance markings by Dieter Klöcker.

Each of these four-movement works is a real jewel. Mozart worked hard on these six string quartets, and dedicated them to none other than the “inventor†of the genre himself: Joseph Haydn. They were first published in 1785, and have since then been reprinted innumerable times. Wolf-Dieter Seiffert, the editor of this new Henle Urtext edition, already penned the Critical Report for these Haydn Quartets in the New Mozart Edition, 25 years ago. He is now presenting this core repertoire in an edition of its own. This Urtext edition clarifies numerous inaccuracies in other editions, especially with regard to dynamics and articulation, and even corrects a few wrong notes that had gone unnoticed up to now. Special attention has here been paid to making the music as easy-to-read as possible, with ideally placed page turns.

There is a lot to be said for the argument that the oratorio Wacht! Euch zum Streit gefasset macht, which has been handed down anonymously, is actually the only surviving Abendmusik from Dieterich Buxtehude and that he composed this work, also known as Das Jungste Gericht, for St. Mary's Church in Lubeck, where it was probably performed around 1683. For the first time this full-length work, with its richly contrasting style and dramatic action, is made accessible for performance in its original form. Ton Koopman reconstructed the parts which were missing from the source. Score available separately - see item CA.3601900.

The conductor Frieder Bernius regards the motets of Hans Fahrmann as an indispensable and extremely welcome addition to the late Romantic repertoire. The composer's output is little known nowadays. Born in 1860, he was considered the Richard Strauss of the organ during his lifetime. With their demanding harmonies, Fahrmann's choral motets place high demands on choirs and - like Reger's works - stretch tonality to its extremes. And not least, their sonorous expressivity is thanks to their chromatic richness. Frieder Bernius has recorded the Motets opp. 34, 45, and 65 with the SWR Vokalensemble for the first time on CD (Carus 83.499).

In honor of the 150th anniversary of the death of Louis Spohr, for the first time Carus is publishing a critical edition of The Last Judgment, the most important of his four oratorios. It was first performed on Good Friday, 1826 in Kassel. It is based on the theologically most significant portions of the Revelations of John in the New Testament, whose visions of death and eternity Spohr vividly portrayed in music. The work represents an important enrichment to the repertoire of the oratorio, especially suitable for the end of the church year. It is captivating on account of its masterful instrumentation, excellent use of chromaticism, large-scale solo recitatives and accessible choral passages filled with heartfelt sensitivity on the one hand, and exciting drama on the other. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2300300.
