In 1868 William Francis Allen published a collection of spirituals songs sung by slaves whilst they worked. This book started a flood of enthusiasm for the spiritual which continues to this day. Jubilation (a time for celebration) uses the spiritual 'My Lord What A Morning' as the main melody for transitions and modulations throughout and to introduce three further spirituals: I'm Gonna Sing Steal Away and Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit.

The unprecedented commercial success of the CD of Henryk Miko aj Góreckis Third Symphony in 1991 fifteen years after the date of its composition not only drew the Polish composer to the worlds attention arousing interest in his earlier works but also gave rise to a discussion about the state of culture in what might be described as a decadent period. So was the Third Symphony ahead of its time? Was it justifiable to regard the work as an end-of-the-seventies piece of aesthetical provocation? Should the wilful confusion of high and low aesthetic orders be considered a symbol of the end of post-Enlightenment utopia when the idea of progress in all fields including art constituted the fundamental criterion for evaluation? Attempts to answer these questions have given rise to a certain intellectual confusion leading occasionally to the advancing of false theses such as the attribution of Góreckis compositional output to the New Age spiritual landscape or the comparison of his compositional procedures with those of American minimalist composers. In fact the Third Symphony Symphony of Sorrowful Songs reflects both the composers individual exploration of technique and his attempt to determine his own Christian spiritual identity. The composition is a new manifestation of the sonoristic reductionism technique and the idea of simple music in line with Krzysztof Drobas designation of these phenomena according to which all details and modifications of tone colour are significant. By conferring on the three movements of the composition a form of mystery which negated a rational sense of time and made the work dissolve in a seemingly infinite continuum the composer managed to bring the Symphony within the sphere of folk ceremonial tradition. Anguish the principal theme of the composition presented here through both the mothers suffering after her sons death and the image of a woman prisoner in a Gestapo prison makes real sense only in the light of faith and the drama of Golgotha. Góreckis Third Symphony Symphony of Sorrowful Songs for soprano solo and orchestra dedicated to the composers wife was written in 1976. Commissioned by Südwestfunk in Baden-Baden it was premiered on 4 April 1977 during the 14th International Festival of Contemporary Art in Royan with Stefania Woytowicz as soloist. The same singer has made several recordings of the composition with different orchestras. The CD with Dawn Upshaw as soloist and the London Sinfonietta conducted by David Zinman won a Golden Disc award in 1991. The first movements outer sections (Lento sostenuto tranquillo ma cantabile) consist of an austere ten-part canon on strings. Its Aeolian theme was derived from a Kurpian song notated in Rev. Father W adys aw Skierkowskis collection. The canon is characterized by continual repetition of the theme (and its counterpoint) all its answers being tonal and thus not going beyond the notes of the scale. Par LEIVISKA HELVI. Finnish composer Helvi Leiviskä (1902-1982) created a broad-based output of orchestral works, solo songs and chamber music. Her style could be described as moderate modernism, deriving influences from multiple sources such as late Romanticism, Symbolism, Expressionism, Existentialism and Neo-Classicism. Leiviskä's output is characterised by philosophical and religious themes, images of nature and narrative structures. Many of her works focus on human existential angst and spiritual searching and growth. Helvi Leiviskä originally completed her Piano Quartet in A major op. 1 in 1926 but revised it a decade later, in 1935. Written for the traditional piano quartet lineup (violin, viola, cello and piano), the work is in three movements and has a duration of about 25 minutes. It features religious and ecstatic imagery such as may be found in French, German or Russian neo-Romantic styles. Leiviskä's Piano Quartet is considered one of the cornerstones of her chamber music output. Its early version was premiered in two parts at student recitals of the Helsinki Music Institute (the 1st movement in 1925 and the 2nd and 3rd movements in 1926). The revised version was performed in full by Timo Mikkilä (piano), Sulo Aro (violin), Ilmo Ranta (viola) and Pentti Rautawaara (cello) on Finnish radio in 1939. The work was also on the programme of Leiviskä's second composition concert in 1945, being performed on that occasion by Jussi Jalas (piano), Erik Cronvall (violin), Erik Karma (viola) and Yrjö Selin (cello). Two commercial recordings have been released (Finlandia Classics 2012 and Telos Music 2016). It is published for the first time 2022 with an extensive foreword by Susanna Välimäki. Each of the five connected movements in this choral cycle contains references to 'Light ' assembled from various sacred Latin texts. I composed Lux Aeterna in response to my mother's final illness and found great personalcomfort and solace in setting to music these timeless and wondrous words about Light a universal symbol of illumination at all levels - spiritual artistic and intellectual.The work opens and closes with the beginning andending of the Requiem Mass with the central three movements drawn respectively from the Te Deum O Nata Lux and Veni Sancte Spiritus. The opening Introitus introduces several themes that recur later in thework and includes an extended canon on “et lux perpetua.” In Te Domine Speravi contains among other musical elements the cantus firmus “Herzliebster Jesu” (from the Nuremburg Songbook 1677) and a lengthy inverted canon on “fiat misericordia.” O Nata Lux and Veni Sancte Spiritus are paired songs the former an a cappella motet at the center of the work and the latter a spirited jubilant canticle. A quiet setting of the Agnus Dei precedes the final Lux Aeterna which reprises the opening section of the Introitus and concludes with a joyful celebratory Alleluia.--MortenLauridsen
