Three Slavonic Dances for Woodwind Ensemble-Slavonica! est une commande du Bloomsbury Music Group pour le Bloomsbury Woodwind Ensemble. Terry Kenny’s Wind Ensemble series provides highly flexible, four-part arrangements of well-known classics. Parts are offered for flute, oboe, clarinet, alto and tenor saxophone and bassoon. A score is provided and all the parts can be downloaded free of charge from the publisher’s website. Kenny takes care in his arrangements that all four parts are interesting to the player and caters for students of varying technical ability. There are two volumes: Volume one includes Mozart’s “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik”, two Hungarian Dances by Brahms and the Prelude from “L’Arlésienne by Bizet. Volume two includes Mozart’s “Musical Joke” (the movement known to many as the theme to the “Horse of the Year Show”!), “Champagne Polka” by Strauss and “Three Slavonic Dances” by Dvorak. String Quartet E Flat Major Op. 51. When Dvo?ák suddenly became internationally famous in 1878 with his Slavonic Dances, he received, among other things, a request for a new string quartet from Jean Becker, the first violinist of the renowned Florentine Quartet. The composer promptly began working in December 1878 and was able to complete the new piece three months later. Dvo?ák complied in a special way with the wish for a composition in ?Slavonic style?: each of the four movements is informed by melodies and rhythms in the style of Czech folk dances and songs. Since then, opus 51 has not only ranked among the most important works in Dvo?ák?s ?Slavonic period?, but also among the most popular in his chamber music oeuvre in general. Besides the first editions of the score and parts, all surviving autograph sources were consulted for this Henle Urtext edition.
