The 29-year-old Franz Schubert composed his German Mass (D 872) in 1826 at the request of Johann Philipp Neumann, who also wrote the text with the original title “Songs for the celebration of the holy sacrifice of the Mass.” Its name derives from the the fact that - unlike most sacred works of the time - the German language is used. The present volume contains all three settings by Vivaldi of the Marian antiphon Salve Regina that have come down to us. All three are for solo voice: soprano in the case of RV 617, and contralto in that of RV 616 and RV 618. The last two settings are scored for two instrumental cori and introduce woodwind instruments, respectively a flute and a pair of oboes, whereas the instrumentation of the first is confined to strings disposed in a single coro, although a solo violin is employed in three movements. RV 617, preservedin a non-autograph source in Brno, belongs to Vivaldis first period of sacred music composition at the Pietà (1713-1717), while RV 616 and RV 618 are works of his maturity dating from the years around 1730. RV 617 is laid out in four movements, RV 616 and 618 in six movements. All three works are noteworthy for the tenderness of their expression and skilful writing for both the voice and the instruments. The Introduction and Critical Commentary for these vocal scores, prepared by Antonio Frigé, are closely based on those of the Critical Editions by Michael Talbot, published in 1998, 1990 and 1994.

Although a large proportion of Buxtehude's vocal works are sacred compositions, he also composed for secular occasions. In 1680 he composed the wedding aria Klinget fur Freuden, ihr Larmen-Klarinen BuxWV 119 for the marriage of the Swedish King Charles XI to the Danish Princess Ulrika Eleonora. At the same time the Peace of Lund, concluded in 1679 marking the end of an almost five-year-long war between Denmark-Norway and Sweden, was celebrated. The five-verse wedding poem is sung by two sopranos and bass, and the basso continuo has two violins and two trumpets as accompanying instruments in the alternating instrumental ritornelli. Whilst the first and fourth verses express joy about the peace settlement between Denmark and Sweden, verses two and three are predominantly concerned with the bridal couple. Finally, in the last verse, God is asked for his blessing both for the peace settlement and for the royal couple. The later sacred parody of the work for the Feast of the Circumcision of Christ, New Year's Day, as the aria Klinget mit Freuden, ihr klaren Klarinen BuxWV 65 cannot be more precisely dated. Now the trumpets proclaim to the Christian congregation about Jesus and the brightly shining light of the divine word.

Saul was given its first performance under Handel’s direction at the Haymarket Theatre, London, on 16 January 1739. The original libretto (dated 1738) refers to the work as “an Oratorio or Sacred Drama”. This libretto was written by Charles Jennens (1700–1770), a wealthy amateur writer from Gopsall, Leicestershire. A letter of 28 July 1735 from Handel to Jennens suggests that a complete raft of the text already existed at that time.Saul occupies an extraordinarily important position in the English oratorio tradition that Handel brought to perfection, standing alongside Israel in Egypt at the end of the first creative period of such works.
