Par ADES THOMAS. In Three Studies from Couperin, Thomas Adès empathetically reworks three pieces by the Baroque composer into music that is distinctively Adès without dismissing the source material. The basic structures of harmony and duration in ?Les Amusemens?, ?Les Tours de Passe-passe?, and ?L?Âme-en-Peine? remain unchanged, but the retouching of rhythm, texture and orchestral colours reveals an enthralling music that could be no other composer. The Three Studies has earned critical praise and popularity, having received over 200 public performances in more than 20 countries since its 2006 premiere. ?Three Studies from Couperin, looks at the music as if through a kaleidoscope, the shattered pieces of the original tumbling around like glinting fragments of coloured glass.? Four Pieces For Orchestra was composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 2000-2003. Programme note: In 1983 Hans Abrahamsen wrote the first seven of his Ten Studies for Piano. In the early eighties most composers who wrote for the piano were still making strenuous efforts to distance themselves from the instrument?s romantic past for example treating it as a percussion instrument rather than exploiting its expressive ?singing? potential. The piano?s modern identity as a mechanical rational emotionally cool instrument is reflected in Abrahamsen?s studies 5 7; but in the first four studies Abrahamsen allows the piano to?recollect? its past: especially what the composer calls ?the golden German romantic time full of expression night timelessness dream and the irrational?. Accordingly these first four studies were given German one might specifically say Schumanesque - titles: Traumlied (?Dreamsong?) Sturm (?Storm?) Arabeske (?Arabesque?) and Ende (?End?). While Abrahamsen was in no way dissatisfied with the first four Studies as piano music he soon felt the urge to expand them in both time and space. In their new identity as Four Pieces for Orchestra created between 2000-2003 the original studies nearly doubled in length while the forces required expanded from one soloist to an orchestra of Mahlerian/Straussian dimensions including instruments beloved by the late-romantics: Wagner tubas bass trumpet guitar mandolin and the hammer used so memorably in Mahler?s Sixth Symphony and Alban Berg?s Three Pieces for Orchestra. The results are not so much ?arrangements? of the four piano studies more recompositions. A helpful comparison might be made with certain painters: Cézanne portraying the same mountain from different angles; or Monet obsessively returning to Rouen Cathedral in different lights and weather conditions. Abrahamsen himself remembers an important visit to the Munch Museum in Oslo where he saw how Munch painted the same subject

The Mouvements Perpetuels is a short three-movement suite originally composed for solo Piano by the French composer Francis Poulenc premiered in Paris in December 1918 when Poulenc was only19. The suite was an immediate success with public and performers and it remains one of the composer's most popular works.Each of the three pieces in the suite ends inconclusively leaving the music unresolved to lingerin our ears and minds. The suite takes about five minutes in performance. The light-hearted miniature is adapted here for an ensemble of 9 instruments Flute Oboe Clarinet Bassoon Horn Violin Viola Cello C Bass whichgives it more dimension and makes it even more interesting.Francis Poulenc was a French composer and pianist. In his early works Poulenc became known for his high spirits and irreverence. During the 1930sa much more serious side to his nature emerged particularly in the religious music he composed from 1936 onwards which he alternated with his more light-hearted works.

The ‘Easy’ level does not normally exceed Grade 2 in difficulty with most partsplayable in first position while the ‘Moderately Easy’ level includes some parts of around Grade 3 standard. Three characterful lyrical and enjoyable solos written in the salon style of the late 19th-century and allowing the solo double bass to sing throughout the range of the instrument. Tulacek studied composition with Dvorak and his music echoes the Czech nationalist style always melodic tuneful and graceful. Newly typeset in 2009 this edition also includes piano accompaniments for both solo and orchestral tunings. 'This music displays the old-fashioned sentimental romanticism typical of the salon music of the early 20th-century. All three deliciously lyrical pieces are in simple ABA song form.' (ISB) Grade 8 - Trinity-Guildhall /ABRSM Rudolf Tulacek was one of the leading Czech double bassists of his generation and was a respected and influential teacher at the Janacek Academy of Music in Brno. He was born in Jicin Bohemia on 25 August 1885 and began to study the double bass at the age of eleven having already studied flute and violin. So rapid was his progress that he soon became a member of the Jicin Municipal Orchestra and in 1901 entered the Prague Academy of Music to study with Frantisek Cerny one of the Czech capital's leading bassists and teachers. Tulacek graduated in 1907 with the highest commendations from his professors performing the Geissel Concerto at his public graduation concert and in 1909 was offered the post of Solo Bassist in the Zagreb Opera Orchestra. From 1920 he was also a Professor at the Zagreb State Academy of Music and subsequently became Concert-Master of the Zagreb Philharmonic. His many recitals attest to his perfect technique supreme musicality and complete command of the instrument and concerts included music by Cerny Dvorak Geissel Kukla Láska Misek Simandl Stein and Tenaglia alongside his own compositions. In 1937 Tulacek became Professor of Double Bass at the Brno Academy of Music and in 1948 became the first Double Bass Professor at the newly founded
