About William Walton Edition
In March 2014 Oxford University Press published the last volume in its magnificent William Walton Edition, the only complete critical edition of a 20th-century British composer's oeuvre. All 24 volumes are handsomely printed and bound. Walton's entire output is now available to scholars and performers in a definitive and fully practical edition, based on the form in which the composer ultimately wished his music to be performed. The general editor, David Lloyd-Jones - the eminent conductor, English music specialist, and founder of Opera North - invited a world-class expert to edit each volume. Carefully researched introductory essays place the works in their historical context and in the composer's oeuvre, and there are full critical notes.

Andrea Gabrieli was a major force in moving the classical music world toward the more modern Venetian school of the Renaissance. Called by Alfred Einstein One of the greatest and most influential masters of the Renaissance period, Gabrieli fully developed the use of choirs of voices and instruments, often in opposition to each other. David has selected three examples from a posthumous 1589 collection, advising that the four-part pieces were originally scored for viols but are here arranged for modern instruments. And while the arrangement will accommodate a number of players per part, single players would be more historically correct. As important as Andrea was to the Venetian School, his fame would be eclipsed by his nephew and student, Giovanni Gabrieli.

Equali were works written for equal, or similar, instruments; in the eighteenth century they were almost always used for funeral services and usually employed a quartet of trombones. The most famous of these were the three Beethoven wrote for the Linz Cathedral in Austria on All Soul's Day 1812. Two of these were adapted later for male voices and were sung at Beethoven's funeral.
These pieces are some of the most famous works for trombones, no doubt due to the fact that they were composed by Beethoven. They were commissioned by Franz Xaver Gloggl, Kappelmeister of the city of Linz, while Beethoven was visiting his brother. According to later accounts by Gloggl's son, although his father had a complete collection of trombones (soprano, alto, tenor, bass or quart) the three Equali were performed by a traditional quartet of alto, tenor and bass trombones.
This edition offers a compromise: the original score and parts are given exactly as written in the complete works, and a version designed for the less experienced players: the three movements are transposed down one step, edited with minor musical suggestions, and all four parts are written in bass clef.
Dr. Mathie has done the Trombone world a great service in bringing this great work in its two forms to publication.

The previously unpublished Two Pieces was released to mark the 2013 centenary of the Benjamin Britten's birth, who founded the publisher Faber Music. These trios were written in late 1929, after Britten composed the Rhapsody for String Quartet (March 1929). This edition was edited by David Matthews, who spent three years as an assistant to Benjamin Britten at Aldeburgh in the late 1960s.

This book provides a comprehensive collection of 30 anthems by 23 composers, for church and school choirs. It includes specially commissioned anthems by established composers including Philip Moore, Richard Shephard and Philip Wilby, as well as works by such newer writers as Joanna Forbes L’Estrange, Owain Park, Ghislaine Reece Trapp, Amy Summers and Toby Young. There are also some new arrangements of classics such as Brother James’ Air and John Rutter’s A Gaelic Blessing. Popular RSCM composers Thomas Hewitt Jones, Piers Maxim, Sarah MacDonald, Peter Nardone and Geoff Weaver have also contributed new works. Many of the pieces have been tried and tested by choirs in worship. They employ a wide range of interesting and inspiring texts that echo the themes of the Sunday readings, as well as familiar words that have been given a new lease of life by inventive and imaginative settings. No choir will feel short-changed by these three-part settings. Each composer has set about creating something original rather than reducing existing material. Many of the pieces are flexible so they can comfortably be sung by smaller groups. The organ parts are straightforward and can be also be played on the piano.

In recent years significant numbers of manuscripts of instrumental pieces by Antonio Vivaldi have been discovered in libraries in Austria (Vienna), Norway (Trondheim}, Poland (Danzig), and especially Sweden (Uppsala, Stockholm, Skara, Lund). Included among these manuscripts are a few pieces for woodwind instruments at least as attractive as those known from the Vivaldi manuscripts in Dresden and Turin. Three of them, a flute sonata in E minor, a trio sonata for 2 oboes and basso continuo, and the present concerto for oboe, violin and orchestra in C minor will be published by Musica Rara under my editorship. David Lasocki, Iowa City, Iowa, U.S.A., December 1971.
