Inspiring Nature These three piano pieces, composed for the ,,Concours, Brin d'Herbe 2019, may be performed separately or as a collection, in which case they should be played in the given order. Though each piece is aimed at a different technical level (I. Elementary, II. Advanced, III. Intermediate), they have a common artistic aim: to connect musical expression with poetic inspiration. In particular, these pieces meditate on the emotional connection between our interior life and the vast and varied landscapes of the natural world all around us. While composing I found myself re-reading Kathleen Raine (one of my favourite poets) and was struck by her statement (in the foreword to her ,,Selected Poems): ,,'Nature-poetry' is not what we write about nature, but rather the language of images in which nature daily speaks to us of the timeless, age-old mystery in which we participate. Nature communicates today what it told the earliest of humankind, and what it will tell future generations when our modern high-rise cities are no more. Meanings, moods, the whole scale of our inner experience, finds in nature the 'correspondences' through which we may know our boundless selves. Nature is the common, universal language, understood by all. What she says about nature resonates with my understanding of music, which also sometimes affords us an opportunity to know 'our boundless selves'. And I am especially interested in the way that sounds - which, as vibrations in the air, are another aspect of nature - can reveal and heighten our sense of connectedness to ourselves and our surroundings. Each movement is inspired by a single stanza from the poem ,,Amo Ergo Sum by Kathleen Raine, and I would encourage anyone playing these pieces to devote time to internalising the words as well as the music, for they may contain the key to an accurate expression. As such, the relevant words are quoted at the start of each score. ,,Inner Landscapes is dedicated to Joe Browning, Lexy Oliver and Omar Shahryar. It concludes with a majestic feeling of victory, celebrating the Olympic spirit.Though written through contemporary means, this programmatic work seeks to remember the great architectural achievements of past generations. As a former director with the Bay Youth Orchestras of Virginia, it was truly an honor to write this piece commemorating the years of dedication and inspiration from my former colleague, Christina Morton.Movements were written with the traditional symphonic order in mind, but they may be played in any order or as stand-alone works. The timpani part is optional, but very highly recommended as it significantly adds to the majestic nature of these works.

This exciting and contemporary arrangement blends two traditional carols, We Three Kings and O Come, O Come Emmanuel. Mystery and intrigue pervade the opening 6/8 section, as the themes are introduced. This quickly transitions into an energetic rhythmic 3/4, with moments of a syncopated 6/8 feel, melodic interplay, and other musical surprises. This balanced work allows each member of the orchestra to play melodic material, as well as a range of dynamics and articulations that will give listeners and performers an engaging experience from start to finish.

Dediche is a series of short miniature pieces for solo guitar written in 1991 by Chiara Benati, an authoritative exponent of what can be called the School of Bologna, and who has devoted many pages of her catalogue to the guitar (Chiara won a first prize in 1986 at the Competition for Guitar Composition organized by the historic magazine Il Fronimo). From the point of view of the guitar idiom, it is striking how the compositional research of Chiara Benati (who does not play the guitar) has penetrated deeply into the nature of the instrument. In my job of adding the fingering to the pieces, I started from the precise indications concerning the strings already provided by the Composer, who meticulously imagined the instrumental result created by the play of resonances and the consequent precise distribution of the parts on different strings (let us think of the tremolos superimposed on different strings in the second Dedica and the counterpoint in three parts each written on its own musical stave), with a skilful use of glissandos and other instrumental effects. From the musical point of view, a similar meticulousness in writing is evident, shown, for example, by indicating the temporal separation between the figures by means of their spatial distance indicated in the score. The result is an instrumentally and musically rigorous writing which also helps the performer by appealing to his ability to empathize, following the indications written in the score and in the key, with the expressive atmosphere of the work, and through that specific aspect of controlled performance flexibility and sound sensitivity necessary to render it properly. These delicate miniatures, suffused with mystery and melancholy, and so masterfully written for the guitar, are in my opinion an important addition to the contemporary repertoire of the instrument. This contemporary Stations of the Cross, written by theologian and storyteller John Shea, is designed for a leader and congregation. While in keeping with the traditional devotion, it also contains aspects of liturgical drama. At each station a character presents a monologue that connects the passion of Christ with contemporary forms of suffering, followed by a brief reflection by the leader, a period of silence, and a short sung response‚Äîa total time of forty-five to fifty-five minutes for the whole service. Through their participation in the fourteen stations, the leader, speakers, and assembly enter more deeply into the passion of Christ and into the mystery of their own suffering. The 8.5 x 11 leader/accompaniment edition is three-hole punched to fit in a ceremonial binder, and contains the complete text of the service as well as accompaniment versions of Steve Warner‚ ‚Crux Fidelis‚ and Kevin Keil and Alan Hommerding‚ ‚Stations of the Cross.‚ The coordinating people's edition (WLP# 008240) contains the reflection responses and assembly versions of these same pieces.
