These works range from small-scale early pieces to larger scale settings of music related to the Concord_x001A_Sonata. The volume also contains critical performance editions of four important genre pieces by Ives. Jean-Henri d'Anglebert (1629-1691) was one of the foremost composers of Keyboard music of his day. Therefore the collection of his works Pieces for Harpsichord is essential to all players of early Baroque Keyboard music. D'Anglebert's Pieces for Harpsichord represents some of the finest achievements of the French Harpsichord school and shows the composer's mastery of counterpoint as well as his ability to experiment with texture to achieve orchestral sonority. Moreover d'Anglebert's collection contains a table of ornaments which formed the basis of those of J. S. Bach and other significantcomposers. The first volume of Pieces for Harpsichord comprises four Harpsichord Suites composed by d'Anglebert each of which consist of the usual dance movements together with transcriptions from Lully's operas. Furthermore the three unmeasured preludes included in Suites one two and three are truly remarkable examples of their kind. With a descriptive preface in French English and German volume one of d'Anglebert's Pieces for Harpsichord is a sublime addition to the repertoire of early Baroque Keyboard music.

'Three Scherzi for violin and piano follow closely the Minuet and Trio form used so often for lighter movements in eighteenth and early nineteenth century sonatas and symphonies. In each piece the Minuet isdivided into two sections and each section is repeated; similarly the Trio section is also divided into two repeated sections in which the music is generally more gently paced. After the Trio the minuet is played againimmediately this time without repeats. In these Scherzi I have chosen to use variants of the original of each section in most instances rather than make exact repetitions. The first Scherzo lasts approximately 3 minutes thesecond 6 minutes and the third 2 minutes. Part of my interest and purpose in writing these pieces was to use an identical but highly elastic form for three pieces of different durations. I was also intrigued by the form’shistorical development and evolution into the Scherzo and I hope this explains the atmosphere and style of the music.The material for each of the three pieces is different although the harmonic and rhythmic worlds ofeach one are similar and as a result they do form a complete work in three movements. However each of the three Scherzi may be played separately. These three pieces were written between September 2004 and August2007.'Brian Elias

Five Early Piano Pieces. Par EOTVOS PETER. Peter Eötvös completed his early neo-classical Hungarian piano pieces at the age of 17. Now published in one volume, they were created when he studied composition at the Budapest Music Academy between 1959 and 1961, shortly before taking up a scholarship to study conducting in Cologne. A highlight is the witty three-movement Hommage à Haydn in which he humorously satirizes the famous Sonata in D major, nightmare of many a piano student, among others./ Répertoire / Piano

With the new Urtext Primo series Wiener Urtext Edition intends to bridge the gap between studying a Piano method and taking additional lessons. Beginning with a performance level which is outlined by pieces such as Bach's Minuet in G (BWV Anh. 116) Mozart's Minuet in F (KV 5) or Schumann's Wilder Reiter (Op. 68/8) works by three different composers are selected for each volume in the series with the aim of offering Piano pupils (or even adults who want to resume Piano playing) a wide range of repertoire pieces on the basis of which they can enhance their technical and musical skills. The pieces' range of levels of difficulty is relativelynarrow so that the volume can be used continuously over a period of about two years. This is what distinguishes the Urtext Primo approach from almost all common anthologies. The selected repertoire takes into account not only pieces of the classic canon of lessons but also lesser known works which are in no way of less importance for Piano lessons. The Urtext Primo volumes are published in the internationally recognised standard of the Wiener Urtext editions. The explanations included in each volume shall help to deepen the knowledge of musical styles music history and piano playing. A repertoire chart at the end of each volume gives a rough overview of the levels of difficulty of the selected pieces. Volume 1 contains both frequently played educational works by Bach and lesser known pieces by Handel and Scarlatti Volume 2 compositions by Haydn and Mozart as well as musically and educationally attractive pieces by Cimarosa. Volume 3 (scheduled for publication in summer 2013) contains pieces by Beethoven Schubert and Hummel Volume 4 (scheduled for publication in early 2014) works by Schumann Brahms and Theodor Kirchner. Further volumes are being planned.

These three pieces were written seperately between 1901 and 1910 for cello and piano but are arranged here for Violin and Piano. Three of Frank Bridge's more popular and familiar works from his early days of composition are included here and although masterful and beautiful are rather conservative in the use of traditional techniques.

Posterity has retained of Nadia Boulanger only her gifts as a virtuoso of the piano and organ her skill as a conductor (of vocal ensemble and orchestra) and most of all her incredible charisma as a teacher. For nearly sixty years 'Mademoiselle' made the most of her famous Wednesdays bringing rigour and passion to the training of several generations of musicians: among so many others Aaron Copland Leonard Bernstein Igor Markevitch Michel Legrand Witold Lutoslawski Astor Piazzolla Quincy Jones and John-Eliot Gardiner have all kept unforgettable memories of thesetimes.Was Nadia Boulanger wrong to let teaching music take precedence over her composing as Gabriel Fauré the great master she venerated believed? The publication of Three Pieces for Viola and Piano raises the question. This transcription of Three Pieces for cello and piano was composed between 1911 and 1913 and published by Heugel. The two initial pieces were originally written for organ: the first in E flat minor brings a moderate tempo to a melancholy cantilena with Romantic accents while the second in A minor exudes warmth and tenderness. The third piece (C sharp minor) most likely originally titled Danse espagnole heralds the Roaring Twenties with its restlessness and festive crackle. Together they emit a charm that is difficult to resist.
