From Felix Mendelssohn's oratorio, Christus, this masterwork adaptation tastefully presents a classical work for church and academic choirs. This chorus is from one of Mendelssohn's final works which was never completed. The rolling triplet accompaniment pushes the composition forward with wave-like arches, supporting the choir in all of its sonorous glory. A smooth contrapuntal style contrasts with dramatic accents and powerful crescendos, displaying the confident scripture-based text with appropriate excitement! John Leavitt has provided a new piano accompaniment as well as a new sparkling orchestration that supports the work while staying faithful to the Mendelssohn original. Score and Parts (fl 1-2, ob, cl 1-2, bn, perc, timp, hp, vn 1-2, va, vc, db) available as a digital download.

UPC: 688670220371. Latin. Isaiah 4:6; Psalms 31:7.
Written for the Enchanted Voices CD, this is one of many settings of texts either from the Beatitudes (or springing from them) available from this composer. For soprano solo and SSAA chorus, organ, cello, synthesizer, the music has a light, ethereal feeling. “Beati” can be taken as a sort of “Blessed are they” prefix for the movements which are not direct quotes from the Beatitudes. This movement begins with the soloist singing in English (“Blessed are the stateless; blessed are the homeless”). Next the chorus sings Latin settings of Isaiah 4:6 (“And there shall be a tabernacle”) and Psalms 31:7 (“Thou art my refuge”). The Latin is set in a sort of mantra-like declamatory style, moving through unison into two-part and finally three. All voice return to the opening theme in English originally sung by the soloist. Then the two concepts are overlaid, the solo motif with the declamatory Latin. The choral voices recap the unison-through-three part declamatory section, the soloist briefly returns to the opening theme. Duration 7:25

Dániel Dobos (* 1994) studied with Gyula Fekete and Máté Bella at the Department of Composition of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music. In his violin concerto Sylvanus, he uses the technical repertoire of Transylvanian folk violinists. His piano piece, Drumul dracului, which won the first prize in 2018 at the Béla Bartók World Competition, also focuses on a new interpretation of Transylvanian folk music roots. In Callis stellarum, Dobos set one of the apocalyptic visions by the prophet Isaiah: “For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.” At the end of the composition, the Hungarian folk song “Csillagok, csillagok” (Stars and Stars) is heard as a kind of hopeful association. Commissioned by the municipality of Debrecen, this piece won the first prize in the youth mixed choir category of the HangKELTO Youth Composition Competition held in 2021.
