The Well-Tempered Clavier Part I-The Well-Tempered Clavier was the title given to the book of twenty-four preludes and fugues in all the major and minor keys which was composed and compiled during Bachâ??s appointment in Kothen in 1722. Bach later wrote afurther twenty-four preludes and fugues and so the forty-eight preludes and fugues eventually became collectively known as the Well-Tempered Clavier Parts 1 And 2.Bach composed the Well-Tempered Clavier Part1 â??for the profit and use of musical youth desirous of learning and especially for the pastime of those already skilled in this study.â?? Apart from various insignificant emendations relating to accidentals and ornamentation, this 1997 revision of Bach's Welltempered Clavier contains a remarkable correction in the musical text of the B minor prelude which so far has not been included in any modern edition. The present Wiener Urtext Edition deviates from the autograph which seems erroneous in bar 11, and was never revised by Bach himself, and instead follows the musically more logical early version which is supported by a correction by J.Fr.
