Scenes from the composer's native Norway inspired this poem by Charles Anthony Silvestri. Barren and intensely beautiful, this Norwegian land feels sacred, a notion captured in Silvestri's lyrics. Gjeilo has created a stunning soundscape that will be a favorite of chorus. With piano accompaniment and optional string quartet (full score and string quartet parts available separately). *ERRATA NOTE: Soprano 1 starting in measure 50 is a minor third too high. Soprano 1s should sing mm. 50-end a minor third lower, starting on a G (the piece ending on an F). The sample pages here and the digital PDF reflect the corrected version. Ola Gjeilo · Kantorei: TUNDRA.

In his String Quartet (1956) Arne Nordheim used the title EPITAFFIO for the third and last movement. And in 1963 he used this title again, now for a complete work: Epitaffio per orchestra ed nastro magnetico. This orchestral work incorporates the Quasimodo text, sung by a children's chorus, on a tape accompanying the orchestra towards the end of the piece. The present choral version was arranged and typeset by Andrew Smith, based on the instrumental movement from the string quartet, as well as the choral treatment in the orchestral setting.
