The Quintet for Piano and String Quartet was written for the American String Quartet in the summer of 2000. It is in one movement but has two distinct parts. The first is a slow movement characterized by dotted rhythms. It is a fantasy with some long flowing lines interrupted by short fragments usually in the piano. After a rather agitated section in 6/8 time, this section comes to a quiet close on a G-sharp major chord. The second section of this thirteen-minute work is marked Fast and Energetic. It begins with chords that recur throughout the movement and after two measures a long main theme is introduced which is developed and altered during the rest of the fast portion of the work. One could call this second part a sort of rondo form since this long lyrical theme returns always after contrasts. When it does return, it is treated often by means of imitation, but at the climax returns played in unison by the strings while the piano renders an energetic sixteenth note background. The work ends on an E-flat major chord though the piece is certainly not in any one key, but rather features quick modulations. One might call this non-tonal music which nevertheless always feels like it has a tonal center. --Samuel Adler.

Equinox Sonata (2015) for trumpet and piano was written for and is dedicated to Chris Gekker. The work was commissioned with support from the University of Maryland. At the two yearly equinoxes, the plane of the earth's equator passes the center of the sun, and day and night are equal. Sun Horizon is bright and energetic, cast in a loose sonata form. Dream Walking is dedicated in memory of composer Brian Fennelly (1937-2015). The tone is lyric and elegiac--building to several climaxes before ending quietly. Moon Mysteries begins with a machine-like ostinato and a modal melody. The (nervous) energy does not abate as the music presses towards a vigorous conclusion. Program Notes: Charango Capriccioso for piano and string quartet was written in 2016. It is based on a previous version of the work which was commissioned by the Austin Chamber Music Center, where it was premiered on July 11, 2006 by Cuarteto Latinoamericano, Felicity Coltman, Heather Coltman and Margaret Coltman. The previous version is scored for piano 4-hands, string quartet and a second cello. As with many of my works, Charango Capriccioso reflects on South America and its history. The work opens with a mysterious theme, which - in an enigmatic tongue - seems to invite us to a remote place high in the Andes. The piano and later the solo viola take us to a quiet beautiful landscape where soon the solo viola meditates about the sad events that took place there starting with the Spanish conquest. A charango (suggested by the piano) introduces an Andean-inspired upbeat theme which gains momentum after dancing through shifting rhythms and colorful orchestrations. At this point, the engimatic theme returns with a new, almost disturbing character. Before the dance flies out of control, the solo cello reappears with the meditative theme as distant bells (played by the piano) restore the peace. Miguel del Aguila.

Concerto da Camera II is a work for six instruments which may be further grouped into three separate entities - clarinet, string quartet, piano. In this combination, chosen by the work's commissioning organizations (the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in conjunction with Mount Holyoke College), lies the work's first challenge. While pairings of any two of these three sound types abound in the concert literature, the three together form a far less common soundscape. The main difficulty appears in the necessity to reconcile the potential of both the clarinet and the piano of acting in a soloistic capacity when pitted against the string quartet. Indeed, the three movements of the Concerto deal with this problem in various ways, with the balance of power between the six instruments' potential for unity and contrast, solo and ensemble playing, continually shifting and changing. Yet another, more delicate, balance of power is at play here, namely, the relationship between the external, foreground level of the piece and a subtler background level. What, at first, appear like small, gentle melodic strands, mere echoes or residues of the main events, gradually assume an inner life of their own. Never actually taking over yet always there, a salient, if quiet, factor within the work's compositional fabric and evolving organism. Though each movement includes numerous tempo fluctuations, the overall thrust of the work clearly suggests a fast-slow-fast framework, with the last movement being a loosely structured, occasionally tempestuous Rondo.
