Does anyone not know the Little Prince? Antoine de Saint-Exupery's story has been translated into many languages and is known all over the world. Peter Wittrich (*1959) set to music those individual figures and fairytale scenes, emotional and spiritual experiences, transforming them into an experience in sound. The Little Prince is read and loved by several generations, so my own cycle of pieces should also appeal across the generations, to all age groups. These are not primarily pieces for children, though children will enjoy them very much; this is music to suit contemporary tastes with artistic flair and educational merit, equally suitable for use in teaching and concert performance and also providing accessible and easy contemporary piano repertoire for more mature players starting or returning to the piano. -Peter Wittrich Introduction in English and German. Song titles in English, French, and German.

An arrangement of one of the songs from The Little Prince, a fabulous, moving and melodic opera by Rachel Portman with luxurious counter melodies and placid harmonies. This opera is based on French philosopher and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupery's novella, Le Petit Prince, an international classic penned in 1943. It was composed by Rachel Portman, the first woman to win an Oscar for a film score (Emma-1996), with text by Nicholas Wright. While Saint-Exupery's moving parable of self-discovery is the foundation of the opera's appeal, it is Portman's music that gives the work its dramatic impact. The characters are brought to life and portrayed with a delicate combination of humour and poignancy. This SSA and Piano arrangement of The Birds by Richard Allain.

Franco Cesarini composed this four-movement piece originally for concert band in memory of Provençal composer Darius Milhaud. Pastorale de Provence is a piece rich in musical references and the names of the movements - La villageoise (The Villager), Le petit berger (The little Shepherd), La princesse (The Princess) and Le lutin (The Imp) – have been inspired to Franco Cesarini by t18th century French composers who often used descriptive titles to underline the character of their pieces. Another important facet of this composition is the form of the different movements: ancient dance form has been incorporated into each movement, namely a round in the first movement, a musette in the second, a pavane in the third movement, and in the fourth a farandole.

Galea et Bellum was commissioned by the Excelsior Schraard music society (Friesland, the Netherlands). The work tells the story of a rare helmet that was discovered in a church in the Frisian village of Schettens in 2015. Research revealed that it had been the property of Skelte van Aysma, a Frisian officer who fought in the armies of the Princes of Orange Maurice and Frederick Henry during the Eighty Years’ War. This little piece of history was the starting point for this composition. As a leitmotif, the hymn ‘Ach wie flüchtig, ach wie nichtig ist der Menschen Leben’ (‘Ah, how fleeting, ah how insignificant’) has been used. This 17th century melody by Michel Franck, inan arrangement by Johann Sebastian Bach, initially appears only in fragments, but grows to full stature toward the end of the work. An ideal contest piece with lots of challenges for your band.
