Dans un précédent ouvrage*, nous avions exposé la présence du saxophone à la source du jazz, et détaillé son utilisation depuis le style 'New Orleans' jusqu'à la naissance et la maturité du style 'Swing', de Chicago à New York... Dans les décennies qui vont suivre, le saxophone va devenir prépondérant dans la musique de jazz, et détrôner progressivement la clarinette. Il sera tout d'abord la vedette des grands orchestres swing dédiés à la danse (Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman...) et par la suite, grâce au talent des saxophonistes emblématiques de cette période (Don Byas, Art Pepper, Zoot Sims, et tant d'autres...), il prendra la place déterminante que l'on connaît, au sein de formations plus petites (quartets, quintets, sextets...), et forgera progressivement le style 'Bebop'. Les grands 'boppers', tels Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, ou Cannonball Adderley, installeront définitivement le saxophone comme un symbole du jazz. Parallèlement à ce style virtuose et fougueux qu'est le 'bop', se développe également un style plus mélodique et plus suave, le 'West Coast' qui, comme son nom l'indique, naît sur la côte Ouest des Etats-Unis, et se fait représenter plus principalement par des musiciens blancs : Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, Paul Desmond... Nous avons essayé de présenter ces courants musicaux si différents dans cet ouvrage, en illustrant des 'standards' très connus de l'histoire du jazz avec des exemples d'improvisations dans les styles respectifs de ces grands saxophonistes. Sur le CD accompagnant le livre, vous trouverez donc en première partie les morceaux enregistrés à titre d'exemple, avec le modèle de saxophone utilisé par le musicien de référence (alto, ténor ou baryton...). Mais la méthode présente les partitions en Sib et Mib, ce qui permet de les travailler quel que soit le saxophone que vous jouez. En deuxième partie du CD figure l'accompagnement seul, par la 'rythmique' (piano, contrebasse, batterie), sur lequel vous pourrez tester le morceau que vous aurez préalablement travaillé avec l'exemple de la première partie. Un 'La' (440 Hz) est donné au début du CD, pour vous permettre de vous accorder. Tout au long de l'ouvrage, nous avons réuni quelques éléments qui nous paraissaient importants pour l'apprentissage des 'codes' du jazz : biographies des musiciens, principaux effets du jazz au saxophone, les accords utilisés dans la méthode, les gammes pentatoniques et blues, ainsi que les grilles de blues et 'd'anatoles' déclinés dans toutes les tonalités. Un petit lexique expose aussi quelques mots-clés, pour une meilleure compréhension (les mots figurant dans le lexique sont écrits en gras). Continuons donc le voyage au pays du jazz...
