Dan Damon is known as one of a few persons who are gifted both in crafting texts and composing tunes, and he constantly strives to build on these gifts. In this collection of 35 new hymns and songs, Dan's texts continue to break new ground, exploring new themes. The tunes, also, have a modern tonality, with echoes of the jazz music Dan performs publicly.

This intriguing 11-minute work builds on alternations between declamatory unmetered phrases (beginning as “sonorous, rubato, with great aplomb and resonance”) and strictly motoric rhythmic sections, developing in waves of increasing drama and intensity. Commissioned by the Naumburg Foundation for pianist Xiaohui Yang’s Carnegie Hall premiere.Ballade is a one-movement work of approximately 11 minutes, divided into three main parts that are played without significant break.Ballade alternates sections where the performer is invited to apply great interpretive freedom, especially on the temporal plane, with contrasting sections that are quite precise and rhythmic. Although carefully notated, the “freer” sections (often marked rubato) certainly allude at times to the kind of repertoire that is familiar to most concert pianists, doing so not by way of quotation but by the type of expressivity, affect, and even passagework. Thus, the performer should think of the score as a “blueprint,” where the many descriptive words I have inserted throughout the score (ranging from sonorous, rubato, with great aplomb and resonance as the work begins, to with greater motion, in a series of ever-expanding “waves” later on) are intended to act as triggers for one’s sense of imagination and fantasy to take off and bring the music alive! An inscription in the score urges the pianist to play fearlessly and exuberantly, but also tenderly!

The Sea of Stars is a popular tourist destination on the island of Vaadhoo in the Maldives. Special phytoplankton called dinoflagellates turn blue when disturbed, a process called bioluminenscence. As the waves break and crash against the shore, the water turns a sparkling blue, as if the stars are being reflected in the water. The opening of this piece imitates the shimmering water as a nostalgic tune is presented by a solo cello over delicate harmonics and tremolo. As the music swells and accelerates, the flowing theme is passed around the orchestra until a final climactic statement brings back the opening material. The piece ends as quietly and magically as it started.

Symphony No. 6 for orchestra, 1997-99. Preface / Program Note:... with the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years is like a day(New Testament, 2 Peter 3:8)My SYMPHONY NO. 6 was commissioned by the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Gteborg Symphony Orchestra and the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, to be premiered at the millenium 2000.The subtitle AT THE END OF THE DAY can be understood literally or it can mean when all is added up. However, in my opinion, nothing ever quite adds up, there is always something missing, any ending will be provisional ...This symphony appears to end only a few minutes into the first movement, the first passage, as the music fades away to almost-silence, after a start of flying colours. But then there is still something, a small motive (first heard in the initial sound-waves) which reappears, hesitant, but persistent, and this embryo is what leads on the musical progression. An agitated section of many instrumental voices comes next, until all the voices become obsessed with the same phrase, a see-saw motive based on thirds. This section evolves into almost martial ferocity, when broken off by a tutti descent into an extreme bass-world (a bass-world which actually permeates the whole symphony, emplyoing instruments that I have never used before: double-bass tuba, double-bass trombone, double-bass clarinet, and bass flute). The second movement, the second passage, apparently takes off where the first passage ended, but now the events are more ambiguous, and the same music may be perceived as fast-moving one moment and slow-moving the next. This section is a kind of passacaglia, the characteristic baroque bass-variation.Without a break follows the third and last passage, in a contrasting high register. The music is rhythmically knotty as well as freely flowing. As in the beginning of the symphony, a never-ending descent or fall breaks off the events, and at the very end a delta of new beginnings, of other worlds, is revealed ....The symphony is dedicated to Helle, my wife. - Per Norgard.

The title hidden tracks is ambiguous. First of all, the piece is almost throughout imagined as 'multi-track', with layers (in the sense of sound tracks) that partly overlay each other, partly suddenly appear from the background. The composition deals with 'hidden' lines, sounds at the perception threshold, with side effects of the accordion sound which -observed, so to speak, under a compositional 'microscope' - develop a special allure: that is the vertical component. The title has also a horizontal meaning: a 'hidden track' is a piece on a record without a track number that is not mentioned on the cover either. In most cases, a 'hidden track' follows after a longer break after the (presumably) last piece on the record; often this track contains strange sounds, noise or other surprising elements. 'Hidden tracks' are surrounded by a nimbus of the mysterious and subversive. This effect is being used rather often throughout the piece: again and again, it seems to have ended but continues after a pause. The expectation of the listener and the attentiveness also for the tiniest events rises; the performance receives an almost scenic character. hidden tracks was partly composed in August 2008 during a stay at the Kunstlerhaus Lukas in Ahrenshoop at the shores of the Baltic Sea. The work was accompanied by many walks on the beach - again and again, I caught a sight on tracks in the sand that became overlaid by other tracks, wiped out by the wind and the waves... Three songs to poems by D.H. Lawrence for mezzo-soprano and orchestra. This work is one of Kortekangas's most important contributions for solo voice. It is a cycle in three movements, but played without a break. Sparer outer movements, shot through with gentle crescendi and diminuendi delivered in peaceful waves frame a faster and more dramatic central section.
