In this composition Schneider uses the famous words from the liturgy for Good Friday: Darkness fell, and on the ninth hour Jesus called out with a loud voice: My God, why hast Thou forsaken me? Here he draws on the earlier form of the trope, using what was a common device in composition in medieval times, inserted into already completed works as a sort of commentary. In this sense * making use of the post-modern principle of suggesting links across the ages * TENEBRAE makes reference to the motet Tenebrae factae sunt (Schott, C 51305) by Davide Perez (1711-1782), from which some melodic fragments have been taken and freely developed. An explosively contrived stylisation is set against the self-contained world of sound in the original piece. A recording of this title is available on CD WER 62962.

Preface I Programme Note TENEBRAE was commissioned by the Turku (Abo) Music Festival and composed for Finnish guitarist Timo Korhonen, whom I had known and admired for a long time. Timo gave a brillant premiere of TENEBRAE in Turku on August 13, 1991 and has played it several times since then. The title is Latin, and means darkness or gloom, but it also refers to the Roman Catholic matins and lauds services in Holy Week. These are held as dusk falls, and the idea is that the sixteen candles that are burning at the beginning of the service are gradually extinguished until, after sixteenprayers, the church is in darkness. The same development is carried through inTENEBRAE by musical means, so that we have not yet had to resort to acandlelit setting - although it is by no means out of the question. The piece makes extensive use of the guitar's properties for revealing quiet, intimate feelings, although naturally in a work of this scope there is contrasting material included. Tenebrae is a deeply symbolic, curated service designed to lead your congregation through the final hours of Christ's life on earth. Based on the ancient Tenebrae, the gradual extinguishing of candles produces increased shadows and ultimately darkness by the end of the service, symbolizing Christ's death. With the inclusion of the optional Lord's Supper, this is a complete 60-minute service that includes three choral anthems, instrumental duets, litanies, underscores, and full worship leader notes.

Davide Perez (1711-1782), who was known to his contemporaries above all as a composer of operas, wrote this skilful late baroque passiontide motet setting of the well-known words from the story of Christ's Passion. The composer Enjott Schneider was inspired by this composition to write his work Tenebrae for soprano, violin and organ (ED 9668). We suggest that a concert performance might feature Tenebrae together with this motet by Davide Perez, performed by a choir a cappella.

Tenebrae (1982), a single-movement cello concerto, commissioned and premiered by Rostropovich who praised the composer for his fine understanding and command of the rich timbre of the instrument. It is a convincing and almost nightmarish work containing music which leaves a tremendous impact on the listener. Not least in the central section where ghastly and terrifying apparitions are invoked out of the darkness. The final poetical section of the work is directly inspired by the description of the closing movement of Leverkuhn's Cantata in Thomas Mann's Doktor Faustus.

The Good Friday Responsory Tenebrae factae sunt for six-part chorus was commissioned in 2012 for Peking University Student Choir and was premiered at the World Choir Games in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA conducted by Hou Xijin. It is an ambitious work with a fervent intensity. Matsushita sets the two last words of Jesus, Deus meus, ut quid me dereliquisti? [My God, why hast thou forsaken me] and Pater, in manus tuas commendo spiritum meum [Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit] as pained outcries in Stravinskyian harshness, in chords characterized by tritones, as a truly superhuman work of redemption whose Easter message of hope only appears in the last conciliatory F major chord. Although this work lies slightly beyond the upper limit of the musical and vocal technical demands of the Carus Contemporary series, it is well within the abilities of ambitious chamber choirs.

In Calvary's Shadow is a deeply moving service of penitence and forgiveness. With elegant simplicity, it invites the faithful to experience Jesus' journey from betrayal through crucifixion with a tightly woven tapestry of dramatic scripture readings, vocal solos and congregational singing, and arrangements of spirituals and gospel hymns, as well as newly composed music by celebrated composer Victor Johnson. Central to both the title and the liturgy is the ritual extinguishing of seven candles, leaving the church in total darkness except for the Christ Candle. After a period of quiet meditation while sitting in Calvary's shadow, God's people exit the church in silence. Approximately 30 minutes long, this dramatic Tenebrae service is perfect for incorporation into regular Holy Week worship. Quickly and easily prepared, it can be performed with or without simple staging and costumes, and the readings can be performed by one reader or by up to five readers.
