Dragons! is a dramatic and comical musical for Key Stages 2 and 3, by poet Nick Toczek and acclaimed composer Malcolm Singer. Fergus is different from all the other kids - he is turning into a Dragon! He and his imaginary friends are taken through their paces at the School For Dragons, where they are taught to speak Dragonese and how to become hard as nails! Soon he discovers that he's not the only person he knows who is a dragon, and that in fact these firey fiends are everywhere! Dragons contains nine original, varied and challenging songs and includes optional solos and instrumentals. The play has a super rhyming story, and the songs are also suitable as a song-cycle for young choirs. The matching CD contains a complete performance of all the songs, plus imaginative backing tracks to sing along to. Pupil's Book: Catalogue number GA11638. Script available in student book.

The Belgian composer Nicholas Lens presents extremely varied etudes, exercises and simple phrases with wonderfully telling titles from poetry and everyday world for children and adults. For the most part the studies are tonal and simple and have no constructed line. They are not based on any educational concept but leave the musical dramatization to the pupils and teachers: 'Notes and rhythms are just notes and rhythms, they do not have that many rules, they do not have any pretension, they are just tools for you to use to express what you want to share'.

Wohlfahrt’s Foundation Studies have long been successful tools forviolinists and violists in mastering the technical difficulties of theirinstruments. Originally conceived for a complete comprehension offirst position on the violin and viola, Richard Hughey presents thisnew edition for cello students. Transcribing these etudes for the cellopresents new challenges for the performer. Particular passages, forexample, require the student to make use of the second and eventhird positions. The fingerings chosen for these passages reflectthese shifting positions in a coherent and logical way. Trainedcomprehensively in both cello and conducting, Hughey shares hiswealth of experience and knowledge in Wohlfahrt’s FoundationStudies for the Violoncello. The violin etudes and exercises of Franz Wohlfahrt havebeen and continue to be used by violin and recently violateachers the world over. Franz was the son of HeinrichWohlfahrt (1797, Kößnitz–1883, Leipzig), a noted pianoteacher who also published many studies for piano thatwere very successful with younger students. Heinrichdeveloped a keen sense for the pedagogical development ofchildren and composed excellent studies accordingly. Withthe education of his sons Robert (1826, Weimar–deathdate unknown) and Franz (1833, Frauenpriesnitz–1884,Leipzig), he passed these pedagogical abilities to the nextgeneration. In the preface to his Violin Studies Opus 45, FranzWohlfahrt wrote:The study of the violin presents certain difficultiesfor beginners which are frequently the cause of a suddendecrease in the pupil’s zeal and ambition, even before he hasmastered the first fundamentals. The blame for this is commonly laid on the teacher, who is called incapable or negligent; losing sight of thefact that the pupil began his studies without the slightestnotion, not merely of the difficulties to be encountered, but also of the regular and diligent effort indispensable forovercoming them.It is important, therefore, to smooth these first severitiesby showing their usefulness and making them agreeable; tothis end my Violin Method was published and the presentexercises have been written, which latter may be consideredas forming a supplement to the former. If practiced carefully and intelligently, they will serve asa solid foundation for the technique of any player ambitiousto become an artist. These studies have been successful tools for violinistsand violists to begin to master the technical difficulties oftheir instruments. Clearly conceived for a more completecomprehension of the use of the first position on the violinand similarly for the viola, presenting these etudes forthe cello presents a new challenge. As ongoing violinistsand violists can use the fourth finger to play the note ofthe next higher open string, this is not possible on thecello. To perform these exercises on the cello, particularlyreaching the “E” on the A-string, requires the studentto make use of the second and even third positions. Thefingerings chosen for these passages reflect the necessityof shifting to these positions. This is of great advantage,as a new set of studies now can be used by the studentto practice shifting to and from those positions and thusincreases technical proficiency in the second and thirdpositions of the cello.

Read below what Roger Smith had to say about completing this momumental work from the manuscripts of Ernest Williams. We are all thankful for his hard work: 'The Ernest S. Williams Modern Method for Trumpet or Cornet is generally recognized by teachers and students alike as the finest and most complete ' School ' for Trumpet and Cornett hat has ever been written. Both the technical and the musical aspects of these volumes reflect the genius of Dr. Williams as a musician, and as a teacher.' 'I was privileged to study both Trombone and Baritone with Dr. Williams, in fact he was my only teacher on either instrument. After graduation from the Ernest Williams School of Music, I became a member of the faculty, and assisted Dr. Williams with the teaching of Brasses, under his direct guidance, and using this material. Dr. Williams commenced the revision of the books at that time for Trombone and Baritone, a task which he was never to complete. This revision, based largely on his manuscripts, is the result of my training as his pupil and assistant, and of my experience as teacher of Trombone at the Juilliard School of Music.' 'The principal problems were two; proper introduction of the positions on the trombone, which are more difficul to learn than the valve combinations on Baritone or Trumpet, and the contrasting techniques of legato and slur on the two instruments. For these reasons some chapters of the book have been revised considerably, and some new material added from time to time.' If you do not know this book, you have to take a look.

Ferdinand Küchler is regarded as one of the great violin teachers of the 20th century. Apart from his Violin Method, it is, above all, his concertinos that are an absolute must for the development of any violin pupil, especially his famous Concertino in G major Op. 11 (Schott SE 1001) as well as his Concertino in D major Op. 15 which both enjoy great popularity. Composed “in the style of Antonio Vivaldi”, the work has, without doubt, been one of the most frequently played works in student violin literature for decades. It is the perfect educational link to Vivaldi's somewhat more difficult “student concertos”. The completely baroque-style movements appeal to every pupil. The fast outer movements contain rewarding, always seemingly violinistic runs and idiomatic figurations. The appeal of the slow middle movement lies in its simple, yet tonally demanding Siciliano theme. The works requires knowledge of the 2nd and 3rd positions and is here presented in a new modern edition. Bowing, articulation and fingerings are based on today's experience of interpreting Vivaldi's music, providing creative space and possibilities for personal ideas in modern violin lessons. This edition is part of the new Schott Student Edition series which offers varied literature at five different levels of difficulty, from 1 (easy) to 5 (difficult), for instrumental lessons. Trevor Webb and Nicholas Drewe. A series of books giving practical projects for use in preparation of the GCSE examinations in music. All the books are grounded on the three major principles of the GCSE syllabuses: listening, composing and performing. They may be used either as a complete series or independently. In the early stages the emphasis is on active participation, the subject matter is diverse, allowing scope for the teacher to introduce a broad range of musical topics. The listening and composing elements gain a greater importance within the series as it progresses, although there is always integration between them. Books 1 And 2 contain a variety of projects on rhythm, scales, tunes, chords, writing a pop song, composing with electronic and conventional instruments and composing with voices amongst many other ideas. Books 3 And 4 offer 22 different listening exercises which are based on the works of a wide range of composers including Bach, Handel, Elgar, Britten, Joplin, McCartney and Lloyd Webber. Each piece is presented in the form of a skeleton score and questions are set to develop the pupil's aural perception and musical literacy. The music cassette which accompanies these two books includes recordings of many of the works.
