Als Alexander III. 1881 den Zarenthron bestieg, begann fur die russische Oper eine neue, oft als Goldenes Zeitalter' bezeichnete Epoche, in der Cajkovskij zum fuhrenden Komponisten aufstieg. Die vom Zaren eingeleitete Reform der Kaiserlichen Theater, zu denen seinerzeit in Petersburg italienische und russische Oper, Ballett sowie russisches, deutsches und franzosisches Drama gehorten, fuhrte zu einer nachhaltigen Umstrukturierung der Theaterhierarchie. Die russische Oper holte in kurzester Zeit Entwicklungen nach, wie sie fur die Pariser Grand opera' charakteristisch waren. Die Arbeit beleuchtet Institutionen und Auffuhrungspraxis, die Auseinandersetzung der russischen Komponisten mit der Grand opera und mit Richard Wagner und die zeitgenossischen Werke im Kontext der genannten Reformen. Ein umfangreicher Anhang bietet bisher unbekannte Quellentexte, Premierendaten und Auffuhrungsstatistiken.
