Volume 9 in the series of Supplements is mainly devoted to hitherto unpublished or inaccessible works. Apart from the piano score of the Berlioz symphony it contains smaller-scale late masterpieces (Excelsior!, Resignazione), the Album leaves written in Woronince in 1847, the large-scale but unfinished and not fully worked out Figaro and Don Juan fantasia, incorporating several Mozart themes, the piano piece No.1 in A flat major, two unpublished works incorrectly identified up till now by the special literature, the Maometto fantasia and the Siege de Corinthe (both transcriptions of Rossini works), and the volume also includes three other unpublished works (the Piano piece in Fmajor, the Cavatina from Robert le Diable by Meyerbeer, and Freudvoll und leidvoll, written down for Pauline von Iwanowska. The Prefaces preceding the scores, which give very accurate, detailed information about the genesis of the works, make interesting reading in themselves, but their true significance consists in the new scholarly discoveries made by the editors. Similarly to the other NLE volumes, both the cloth-bound (Z. 14504a) version and the one bound in hard-paper (Z. 14504) contain in three languages the series preface, the preface to this volume, and the captions below the facsimiles, but the critical notes in English are to be found only in the linen-bound edition.

Beethoven drafted his Eighth Symphony in F major between autumn 1811 and the winter months of 1812/13, directly after completing his Seventh Symphony; thus, these two symphonies were composed even more closely together than had been the 3rd/4th and 5th/6th as the two previously paired symphonies. The Seventh and Eighth were rehearsed together in April 1813, though for unknown reasons the Eighth was not premiered until February 1814, two and a half months after the Seventh. Since, unlike many of his other works, Beethoven carefully proofread the text of the Eighth's first edition (1817), the print contains comparatively few errors. The engraver's copy by the copyist Diabelli (at that time still a Steiner publishing-house employee) does, however, also contain additions and refinements, whose authorization by the composer is questionable. Within the context of the new Beethoven Complete Edition, editor Ernst Herttrich nevertheless succeeded in presenting a meticulously and carefully crafted music text based on the autograph and the first edition, which, as a definitive edition, has the greatest plausibility and validity.

During his Bohemian spa trip in September 1811, Beethoven notated the first sketches for the Seventh Symphony, a work that occupied him until May 1812 - parallel at times with its disparate sister work, the Eighth Symphony in F major. After a non-public rehearsal on 21 April 1813 in Archduke Rudolph's palace, the Seventh was officially premiered on 8 December, together with the programmatic symphony Wellington's Victory or the Battle of Vitoria op. 91. The concert given before 5,000 enthusiastic listeners became Beethoven's greatest success, probably mainly because of the second mentioned work. The present edition from the new Beethoven Complete Edition re-evaluates the complicated source situation, using as the main sources only the autograph and the parts from the premiere. Revealed could be a number of writing errors and misunderstandings in the copying of the parts, leading to changes from previous editions, particularly concerning numerous markings of dynamics and articulation.

Cesar Franck wrote his Symphony in D minor in 1887/88; in spite of the work's lukewarm reception at its world premiere on 17 February 1889, the work was published during his lifetime. It was not until a few years later that the established conductors dared perform this work more frequently . It marked the inevitable triumph of a work which had once caused such a furor and whose individuality of conception burst the framework of the genre (double tonality of D and F minor in the opening movement; the combination of Andante and Scherzo in the central one; the recapitulation of the main themes and motifs of the previous movements in the finale). The work was finally accepted into the concert repertoire for good around the turn of the century, not least through the good offices of influential critics and composers.Just as with the previously published Carnival of the Animals (PB/OB 5321) by Saint-Saens, Franck's work also raises many questions concerning its origin and history. Peter Jost based his work on the first edition (the autograph was destroyed in a fire in 1935) as well as on the piano reduction (four-handed) by the composer.A major work of the late-romantic repertoire, Cesar Franck's only symphony joins the ranks of Breitkopf & Hartel's new orchestral editions which follow the principles of Source Criticism for Practical Use.
