However it has long passages for solo Violoncello and is also scored for two Bassoons. Paul Hindemith's musical style is heavily influenced from the music of the Reformation. From composers such as Bach Schumann Brahms and Reger he has inherited a love of all things German such as chorales and a preoccupation with the symphony chamber music and opera. 2ème Symphonie  “Le Double” is a symphonic piece for Orchestra and chamber orchestra composed by Henri Dutilleux. It was commissioned for the 75th birthday of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1959. The piece features three movements which consists in dialogues between the Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra: I. Animato ma misterioso II. Andantino sostenuto III. Allegro fuocoso — Calmato This is the conductor's score which also includes all parts. Henri Dutilleux was internationally acclaimed for his work winning prizes such as the Gold Medal ofthe Royal Philharmonic Society and the UNESCO's International Rostrum of Composers amongst many others. Quand nous en vînmes au trait du scherzo de la symphonie en ut mineur de Beethoven, qui figurait dans le programme, il nous sembla entendre les grognements d'une cinquantaine de porcs effarouchés : telle était l'incohérence et le défaut de justesse de l'exécution de ce passage. Peu à peu cependant elle devint meilleure, l'ensemble s'établit et la phrase apparut nettement dans toute sa sauvage rudesse'. Hector Berlioz, Mémoires, Chapitre LIII Dans ses Mémoires, Hector Berlioz, compositeur français de l'époque romantique (1803-1869) se tenait 'pour satisfait de pouvoir organiser et diriger un concert gigantesque' pour lequel il parvint 'à réunir un personnel de mille vingt deux exécutants'. Cette citation relate les répétitions partielles (par pupitre) du scherzo de la cinquième symphonie de Beethoven placées sous sa direction pour un concert exceptionnel donné à Paris lors de l'Exposition des produits de l'industrie en 1844. Ce scherzo réputé difficile pour la justesse, la conduite de l'archet et la manière de l'interpréter devenait particulièrement délicat, exécuté par un pupitre de trente-six contrebasses. Depuis l'époque de Berlioz, l'apprentissage de la contrebasse a évolué. Les professeurs enseignant dans les structures musicales permettent à nos élèves de devenir de vrais contrebassistes, de vrais techniciens, de vrais professionnels, de vrais musiciens. Néanmoins, le travail de pupitre (ou répétitions partielles) reste indispensable. Contrebassiste au sein de l'Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse pendant quarante ans, mon expérience professionnelle m'a permis de découvrir un vaste répertoire musical. De la musique symphonique à la musique de chambre en passant par le répertoire lyrique, j'ai pu aborder tous les styles de musique depuis l'époque baroque à la musique contemporaine. Les grands chefs d'orchestre qui m'ont dirigé m'ont appris à connaître tous les grands compositeurs de notre musique occidentale, la manière d'interpréter une oeuvre, de la comprendre et de l'analyser. Nous devons écouter et surtout entendre. J'ai voulu donc, par ce premier recueil, transmettre ce que j'avais appris à l'Orchestre et permettre aux élèves de découvrir ce répertoire musical. Professeur de contrebasse au CRD de Montauban, j'ai mis au programme du premier cycle et expérimenté avec mes élèves tous les textes présentés dans ce recueil. Les jeunes contrebassistes ont toujours été très sensibles au travail des extraits musicaux. Ils sont au contact avec la Musique. Afin de parachever leur travail personnel, il est souhaitable qu'ils écoutent les musiques étudiées (enregistrements et concerts). Ces acquisitions leur permettront de découvrir les compositeurs et d'apprendre le langage musical. Ce recueil pédagogique offre un voyage musical de l'époque baroque à l'époque postromantique (de Johann Sebastian Bach à Camille Saint-Saëns). Unlike MacMillan’s first three symphonies Symphony no 4 (2014 15) is essentially abstract. Here he is interested in the interplay of different types of material following upon a fascination with music as ritual that has stretched from Monteverdi in the early 17th century through to Boulez and Birtwistle in the present day. There are four distinct archetypes in this work which can be viewed as rituals of movement exhortation petition and joy. It is also a homage to Robert Carver (c1487 after 1566) the most important Scottish composer of the High Renaissance. There are allusions to Carver’s 10-voice Mass Dum sacrum mysterium embedded in the symphony and at anumber of points it emerges from across the centuries in a more discernible form: the vocal lines are muted and muffled literally in the distance as they are played delicately by the back desks of the violas cellos and double basses.

Symphony No. 6 'At The End Of Day' (1997-99) for Orchestra by Per NørgÃ¥rd. Programme note: ”… with the Lord a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years is like a day”  (New Testament 2 Peter 3:8)  My SYMPHONY NO. 6 was commissioned by the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra the Göteborg Symphony Orchestra and the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra to be premiered at the millenium 2000.  The subtitle AT THE END OF THE DAY can be understood literally or it can mean “when all is added up”. However in my opinion nothing ever quite adds up there is always “something” missing any ending will be provisional ...  This symphony appears to end only a few minutes into the first movement the first passage as the music fades away to almost-silence after a start of flying colours. But then there is still “something” a small motive (first heard in the initial sound-waves) which reappears hesitant but persistent and this embryo is what leads on the musical progression. An agitated section of many instrumental voices comes next until all the voices become obsessed with the same phrase a see-saw motive based on thirds. This section evolves into almost martial ferocity when broken off by a tutti descent into an extreme bass-world (a bass-world which actually permeates the whole symphony emplyoing instruments that I have never used before: double-bass tuba double-bass trombone double-bass clarinet and bass flute).  The second movement the second passage apparently takes off where the first passage ended but now the events are more ambiguous and the same music may be perceived as fast-moving one moment and slow-moving the next. This section is a kind of passacaglia the characteristic baroque bass-variation.  Without a break follows the third and last passage in a

Zingaresca A czardas-influenced work which is full of the fire and passion of the typical Gipsy idiom. Zingaresca offers much for the advanced bassist and would be ideal for conservatoire or university students who are confident playing throughout the solo range of the instrument. A slow and lyrical introduction leads into a rhythmic and lively czardas these with opportunities to demonstrate both musical and technical prowess in equal measure. Ideal as the final work in a recital and performed many times by the composer. The edition includes piano accompaniments for both solo and orchestral tunings. Performance Level: Advanced Miloslav Gajdos is one of Europe's most active and inventive bassist-composers. He was born in northern Moravia in 1948 and initially learned violin before transferring to the double bass, studying with Alois Kriz, Jiri Bortlicek and Ludwig Streicher. He has been Professor of Double Bass at the Vejvenovsky Conseravtoire in Kromeriz (Czech Republic) since 1971, and was a member of the Olomouc Symphony Orchestra for a number of years. He is Director of the Gregora International Double Bass Competition, founded in 1979 and held every two years in Kromeriz, and has been a juror at many competitions in Hungary, Germany and the Czech Republic. Miloslav Gajdos is a prolific composer and arranger and, for almost 40 years, has produced a vast body of original works and transcriptions for double bass which are performed worldwide. His original works combine Czech lyricism and melody with brilliant technical demands, and music from one to sixteen double basses. He writes in a traditional and accessible style, producing music for every level of performer, particularly for the advanced bassist, and his many works for unaccompanied double bass are frequently chosen as international competition repertoire. Miloslav Gajdos was Recital Music's Featured Composer in 2007 and has recently revised a number of earlier works for the intermediate bassist which will be published by Recital Music.intermediate bassist which will be published by Recital Music.
