This work is a reworking of the music written by Nino Rota for the film of the same name by Federico Fellini, Oscar winner in 1957. In 1967 Rota composed the music for the ballet La strada for the Teatro alla Scala, in collaboration with the choreographer Mario Pistoni, where Carla Fracci was expected to play the role of Gelsomina. This show has always remained alive in my memory since in those years I began the profession of flutist at La Scala, where I also had the opportunity to perform ballet. The transcription traces the salient moments of the plot, highlighted by the captions taken from the original score. Free of virtuosity, so appreciated by the flutists, it is conceived with the intention of restoring the dramaturgical tension of the Fellini-Rota masterpiece. (C. Tabarelli).

In The Pioneers Philip Sparke salutes the bicentenary of an expedition by two all time American heroes - Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. They were commissioned by US President Thomas Jefferson to find the headwaters of the Missouri and a route to the Pacific following the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the USA. They set out as the ‘Corps of Discovery’ from Louisville, Kentucky, in May 1804 and not only did they succeed in reaching the Pacific through hostile territory, but also found their way back - in 3 years! The piece is not descriptive of the journey but gives the composer the opportunity to celebrate the 200th anniversary of this amazing feat. Add a touchof the wild-west to any concert with this exciting work.

De titel van dit werk verwijst naar het begin van het avontuur van de ‘National Children’s Brass Band of Great Britain’, maar The Pioneers is ook een eerbewijs aan twee helden van de componist: Meriwether Lewis en William Clark,die twee eeuwen geleden op expeditie gingen in opdracht van de Amerikaanse president Thomas Jefferson. Le 30 avril 1803, le Traité de cession de la Louisiane entre la France et les États-Unis était signé. L’acquisition de ces terres permet aux États-Unis de doubler la superficie de leur territoire de l’époque. Meriwether Lewis et William Clark sont alors mandatés par le président Thomas Jefferson, pour cartographier les sources du Missouri et tracer une voie vers le Pacifique. Parti de Louisville dans le Kentucky, en mai 1804, le corps expéditionnaire (‘Corps of Discovery’) traverse d’interminables territoires hostiles, réussit atteindre le Pacifique et rentre au terme d’un périple de deux ans ! Cette composition ne fait pas le récit du voyage, mais permet au compositeur decommémorer les deux cents ans de cette fabuleuse expédition.

L’allora presidente Thomas Jefferson incaricò Meriwether Lewis e William Clark di cartografare le sorgenti del fiume Missouri e tracciare la strada verso il Pacifico. Partita da Louisville (Kentucky), nel maggio del 1804, la spedizione attraversò interminabili territori ostili, riuscendo a raggiungere il Pacifico per poi tornare alla base di partenza al termine di un periplo durato due anni. Questo brano non è un racconto del viaggio, ma permette al compositoredi commemorare i duecento anni di questa favolosa spedizione.

Il teatro d’opera, all’interno dell’intero patrimonio musicale del repertorio cólto, ma per dir meglio, all’interno del portato culturale che ha investito – tramite la sua nascita – dapprima l’Italia e poi l’Europa tutta, mantiene inalterato nel tempo un riconoscimento di grande valore.
In virtù di questo primato, un’attenzione particolare gli è conferita anche in questa sede, nella quale si è voluto condurre lo studente alla scoperta di tre importanti capolavori.
Diversamente da quanto si sia portati a credere, l’opera non è unicamente repertorio per vecchi e canuti parrucconi, ma è spettacolo in grado di catturare anche un pubblico d’età scolare.
Attraverso le molteplici espressioni con le quali l’opera si manifesta (musica e parola su tutte, ma anche gesto e danza, insieme a gestione dello spazio scenico e della luce, elementi che definiscono tutti la complessa dimensione drammaturgica), il teatro d’opera si pone come spettacolo multimediale ante litteram capace come pochi di riassumere esemplarmente in un solo concetto rappresentazioni di pienezza e complessità culturale assai variegate.
Nel tratteggiare la ricchezza di un viaggio alla scoperta dell’opera, si potrebbe affermare che addentrarsi nelle narrazioni di un Figaro, di un Don Giovanni, di un Rigoletto sia un po’ come se da un solo assaggio si degustassero più sapori, come se si riuscisse a cogliere l’intero panorama solamente sbirciando da un foro. In questa operazione si possono identificare gli estremi di una visione ologrammatica della realtà, quella che ci consente di mettere in evidenza come una parte sia inscritta nel tutto, ma quanto il tutto stesso costituisca una parte. Questo apparente paradosso, che ci sembra possa essere rappresentato anche dal teatro musicale, è alla base di quell’atteggiamento che ci consente di evitare operazioni di riduzionismo e di semplificazione, e di aumentare invece i livelli di relazione e di complessità con le esperienze che ci accadono.

Il quaderno si rivolge ad allievi non digiuni dei primi rudimenti di alfabetizzazione sonora ed esplora – data la specificità della collana – soprattutto la dimensione musicale, anche se non tralascia di guidare all’indagine delle relazioni che la musica ha con gli altri linguaggi che costruiscono lo spettacolo.
Non è un caso, per di più, che ancora una volta e come costante metodologica che accompagna tutti i quaderni, ci si avvalga anche qui del segno, del gesto, della parola come strategie per la conoscenza dei mezzi espressivi e per l’esplorazione dei significati, tutti meccanismi necessari ad innescare un ascolto attivo.
La scelta di opere e autori si è imposta quasi naturalmente: Mozart, Rossini, Verdi sono ovunque riconoscibili come figure emblematiche del genere operistico. Nessuno potrebbe affermare di aver assaggiato la Sacher Torte senza essere stato a Vienna, così come nessuno potrebbe sostenere di aver assaporato l’opera senza aver avuto occasione di avvicinarsi a questi tre autori.
L’intento del quaderno è dunque quello di fornire supporti all’allievo e all’insegnante per favorire scoperte, per far nascere curiosità.
Gli obiettivi del lavoro si perdono però a metà strada nel momento in cui non si ponga a conclusione del percorso la visione dell’opera.
L’auspicio e l’invito è dunque quello di uscire dalle aule e di recarsi, senza esitazioni, a teatro.
Il valore estetico e il potere seduttivo di un capolavoro sono in grado di disvelarsi talvolta senza che si operi nessun tipo di facilitazione (seppur la preparazione del campo, come questo testo vuole dimostrare, non sia certo operazione inutile); ma, quasi certamente, nessun magnetico incanto potrà fuoriuscire se ci si arresterà unicamente alle esperienze di queste pagine.

The Way to Heaven was commissioned by the Royal Air Force Music Services. 2015 was the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, which took place between July and October 1940, when the courageous fighter pilots of the Royal Air Forcethwarted Hitler’s ambitions to launch an invasion on the UK.
The Way to Heaven opens with fluttering woodwind figures and brass fanfares, which build to a climax before a change of key introduces a short quotation for the Polish National Anthem - Mazurek Dbrowskiego. This fades and you can hear thesignal to scramble and the throaty sounds of the squadron’s Merlin engines bursting into life before they line up to take off. This leads to the main thematic material of the work, which depicts the heaven-bound flight of 303 Squadron as it climbs tointercept the incoming Messerschmitt 109s. A brief allusion to the Polish national anthem brings the piece to a triumphant close.

The Way to Heaven opent met ‘dwarrelende’ motieven in het hout en koperfanfares, die worden opgebouwd tot een climax voordat een modulatie een kort citaat van het Poolse volkslied Mazurek Dbrowskiego introduceert. Dit sterft weg endan horen we het alarmsignaal voor het opstijgen van de vliegtuigen, en het schorre geluid van de Merlin-motoren voordat de gevechtstoestellen de lucht in gaan. The Way to Heaven commence par des motifs tremblants pour bois et des fanfares de cuivres qui se développent vers une apogée ; ensuite une modulation introduit une courte citation de l’hymne national polonais, Mazurek Dbrowskiego. Alorsque ces idées s’affaiblissent, on entend le signal pour décoller en urgence, puis le son rauque des moteurs Merlin de l’escadron mis en marche, avant que les avions ne s’alignent pour décoller.
