Pianist, composer and sound artist Hans Otte is still undervalued in Europe, and the Anglo-American cultural scene is just starting to notice him. Ingo Ahmels' bilingual study of his biography and artistic work highlights Otte's view of life and his aesthetical orientation, providing the fundamentals for an adequate reception. At the center of the book are the solo piano cycles Das Buch der Klange (The Book of Sounds, 1979-82) and Stundenbuch (Hours Book, 1991-98) as well as the related sound installations Atemobjekt (Breath Object, 1970) and NamenKlang (Name Object, 1995). In addition, the publication includes digital media containing sound examples and excerpts from the Otte Media Pool (OMP), and for the first time the authorized catalog of works (Otte Werkverzeichnis, or OWV).

The Jagdquartett (Hunt Quartet), which Jorg Widmann wrote as his third string quartet in 2003, following the Choralquartett, also begins with a visible gesture. After a short signal cry from the performers, the piece starts by quoting Robert Schumann's Papillons op. 2, and for its full duration retains this gesture, these starting sounds. The degrees of recognizability do change continuously, to be sure, in the furious, racing organism of the score. The contours change into forms on another level, yet now and then the begining material returns clearly to the fore, initiated anew by a cry from the performers, and is then digested or mutated as a rhythmic study into a field of harmonic experimentation. On rare occasions, there are moments of pause - as though the musicians were testing the atmosphere, as though they were sensing the weather, so as ultimately to continue playing the quartet across the fields an forests of notes. A hunt after joyful performance, a chase, the whip cracking, after the thing to be shot, the sound, its performer, perhaps the composer himself? - A last shout, morendo, dal niente... - The victim is not the audience, at any rate. When comparing the output of string quartets from the 18th century to thetime of Schumann, it appears to have dropped considerably. Schumann composed only three complete quartets, all of them in the so-called 'chamber music year' 1842. Jorg Widmann, who counts Robert Schumann among his greatest inspirations, finished a series of five string quartets in 2005, at the same age as Schumann. The quartets in the cycle form in themselves the characters of the movements of the classical quartet. Jagdquartett represents the fast middle movement, the scherzo. Widmann's work appears rough and wild in the style of Schumann's alter ego Florestan. His hunt begins in the tempo of 'allegro vivace assai' with the final theme of Schumann's Papillons which often appears or is cited in many of Schumann's compositions. Widmann eventually dismantles the thematic material of his fierce quartet, thus skeletonising his prey.

Apart from numerous publications in the field of music education, the music teacher and composer Hermann Regner (1928-2008) contributed considerably to the brass repertoire, such as material for wind orchestra and wind band. Influenced by his studies with Carl Orff, he paid special attention to the fusion of instrumental education and contemporary music. A matter of particular concern for him was to write practical, easily playable new music for children, young people and amateur musicians - music that takes the technical competence of beginners into account and motivates them to concern themselves with new sounds, rhythms and playing techniques. 'All begins well' is a small collection of easy pieces for trombone with piano accompaniment. The five short pieces are a perfect addition to instrument lessons and 'Jugend musiziert'. The pieces are very melodic, using simple keys (F major, B flat major, E flat major) which are easy to play by the trombone, and they cover a compass from B flat to E flat1.

It was at a flute convention, of all places, where the composer learned how to beatbox. Greg Pattillo, the flutist of the ensemble Project Trio, taught a roomful of (mostly) flute players how to make a few sounds, and she couldn't believe how easy, and effective, it was! She figured, if a random bunch of adult flute players can do this, it should be a piece of cake for students. Inspired by this new-found knowledge, she composed 7th Street Beat, writing beatbox percussion into the parts of all the instruments. The sounds imitate percussive effects normally made by a drum set. The beatbox vocal lines are optional - they are reinforcements for the beatbox sounds in the string parts. Also optional (but highly recommended!) is the improvisation section starting at m. 49. Don't tell the students any rules about what notes to play or not play - simply offer them the opportunity to make up whatever they like, to show off their abilities and musical personalities!.It was at a flute convention, of all places, where the composer learned how to beatbox. PROGRAM NOTES Heartbreak Trail describes the forced relocation of approximately 100,000 Native Americans in the 1830s. Known as the Trail of Tears, thousands lost their lives during the march, and it is remembered today as a great human-rights atrocity and a shameful period in American history. The opening A-section captures the sadness of those in the five tribes who were forced from their homeland. The fast B-section represents the determination to survive the long, difficult trek. Although there were many obstacles, thousands did survive, but a dark A-section returns to depict the loss of homeland, fellow tribe members, and a depression over the new lack of freedom. PERFORMANCE NOTES The opening should be at a moderate pace and section entrances should be balanced at mezzo piano. In m. 12 have the woodwinds play out their melodic material. In m. 20 the brass should pick up the same volume level as did the woodwinds previously. Measure 27 should die away from what was, and then a sudden change in volume, and mood at m. 31. The entire B-section should be bold, with attention paid to the many accents. (Before working the B-section, an explanation of the difference in accents will probably aid in accuracy.) Measures 37 and 41 have the timpanist and tom-tom player play a very strong forte with attention to the accents. Measures 51 to 52 work a strong quick crescendo to fortissimo. This should set up the tutti forte at m. 53. In m. 61 start a gradual diminuendo to the return of the A-section at m. 68. Explain how to execute the staggered breathing for the flutes, tenor sax and trombone starting at m. 73. Although the final percussion from m. 73 to the end is soft and fading, make sure the final sleigh bell sounds are heard clearly. PROGRAM NOTESHeartbreak Trail describes the forced relocation of approximately 100,000 Native Americans in the 1830s. The full score of Kaija Saariaho's Lichtbogen for Nine Musicians and Live Electronics. The title for this work stems from the composer's experience of seeing the Northern lights whilst starting work on writing the piece, this experience also shaped the form and language of the piece. Lichtbogen was the first time Saariaho had worked with a computer in the context of purely instrumental music, this new compositional element led to harmonic material being created by analysing short transitions played with a violin and cello, starting with artificial harmonic sounds and ending up with complex multi-phonic sounds. The rhythmic elements of this piece were created using a network of computer programmes, allowing the composer to construct interpolations and transitions for different musical parameters, rhythmic interpolations created through sets of musical patterns that are repeated but each time slightly modified in character. Lichtbogen is the commission of the French ministry of culture and is dedicated to Paul Mefanc. A splendid work for Ensemble (Flute, Percussion, Harp, Piano, 2 Violins, Viola Cello, Double Bass) and Live Electronics by this inimitable Finnish composer.
