Composed by Carl Maria von Weber for solo viola with orchestra, the Hungarian Rondo has become a standard repertoire bassoon solo. This edition offers a choice of soloist, including bassoon, bass clarinet, euphonium, or tuba. The band setting is carefully arranged to require a minimum of preparation time, and is playable with either full concert band, or if accompanying a soloist requiring greater presence, just woodwinds and horns. Commissioned by the South Carolina Chapter of Phi Beta Mu Band Fraternity in honor of Lorraine Paris, Band Director for 47 years at Newberry High School, Newberry, SC. Lorraine Paris is a native of Greenville, South Carolina, where she graduated from Parker High School. She received her B.S. in Music Education from Winthrop College and her M.A. from Furman University. She began her teaching career in 1948 in Newberry, South Carolina, where she taught for the next 47 years until her retirement in 1995. A member of numerous musical organizations, including Phi Beta Mu and the Theta chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, she served as the first president of the South Carolina Band Directors Association and currently serves as their first Executive Secretary-Treasurer. She has been named Outstanding Bandmaster and Outstanding Contributor by the South Carolina Chapter of Phi Beta Mu, and was also named to that organization's Hall of Fame. Other honors include the South Carolina Career Service Award from ASBDA, the Silver Baton and Scroll of Excellence Awards from WBDNA, and the Band World Legion of Honor. In 1993, she was presented the Key to the City of Newberry, and at her retirement, was awarded the Order of the Palmetto from the State of South Carolina. Pavel Haas (1899–1944), one of Leoš Janácek’s most talented pupils, composed his Wind Quintet op. 10 in 1929. This work was issued by the Prague publisher Edition Sádlo in 1934, and is one of the few compositions that was printed during his lifetime. Its first performance took place in Brno on 24 March 1930. With its relative brevity and standard instrumentation (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon), it is currently gaining in popularity among wind ensembles. The composer structured the quintet as a four-movement suite with the titles „Preludio“, „Preghiera“, „Ballo eccentrico“ and „Epilogo“.This first Urtext edition of the Wind Quintet is based on the original print which was proofread by the composer in 1935, as well as the autograph score and a copyist’s manuscript. The publication has been supported by the Terezín Composers‘ Institute.

Written in memory of Mrs. Peterson, who loved children dearly, the piece depicts the factory life of children laboring 16+ hours a day, manufacturing the shoes and clothes that end up in American retail stores.Factory Child begins with factory sounds and an oppressive, repetitive pattern that supports the melody carried by the upper voices. The second section is composed of wistful, dream-like sounds and melodies that have traces of children’s songs that remind us that these children forced into labor would love to have the opportunity to play, attend school, and dream, but cannot and realistically have little hope for a life we consider normal. The middle section gives way to more sounds from the factory. The climax is a raucous circus-like waltz using themes from both sections.The percussion parts can be covered by six players. Some players will need to cover two parts. Use someone from the wind section if you do not have six, as some of the parts, although important, are not very difficult. The second clarinet never goes over the break and the bass line is usually doubled in the euphonium as well as in the low reeds.This piece is an excellent way for young performers to use their musical voice to affect change. It is a great discussion starter for researching where our apparel comes from and why to stay away from some brands. It can also make students aware of the fantastic opportunity they have to attend school that children in other parts of the world do not.
