Par ARMAN HOWARD. Howard Arman, director of the Bavarian Radio Choir, has been actively engaged with international Christmas carols through various Christmas-related CD productions of his choir in the past years. This has resulted in a number of original arrangements for four- to eight-part mixed choir a cappella, shedding new light on well-known classics such as O du fröhliche [O, you joyful], Stille Nacht [Silent Night] and Lasst uns froh und munter sein [Let us be happy and cheerful]. The first volume includes five Christmas carols from the German-speaking regions. They range from simple but harmonically intriguing settings such as Lieb Nachtigall, wach auf [Dear nightingale, wake up] to eight-part sound paintings with bell-like chimes as in O du fröhliche and classical double choir settings such as Resonet in laudibus . The second volume includes five Christmas spirituals with English texts, forming a contrast to the solemn and festive character of the first. The choir can prove its swing and jazz qualities here; the stirring arrangements are a gain for classical Christmas concerts, too. Following the tradition of the spiritual, some settings also require soloists, which can, however, also be recruited from the choir if adequate singers are available. The first piece combines the spirituals It?s a Birthday and Wasn?t That a Mighty Day to form a medley, Ain?t That a Rockin? gives a moment of tranquility before the likewise rousing spirituals Mary Had a Baby and Little David conclude the volume. Das Te Deum Deutsch 'Herr Gott Dich loben wir' for 12-part mixed Chorus a cappella (SSMezMezAATTBarBarBB).The Te Deum in the translation of Martin Luther 1529. Heinz Werner Zimmermann (born 11 August 1930 in Freiburg im Breisgau) is a German composer. Zimmermann had his first composition instruction from 1946 to 1948 with Julius Weismann and studied from 1950 to 1954 in Heidelberg with Wolfgang Fortner as well as at the Kirchenmusikalisches Institut Heidelberg (Institute for Church Music) there. After passing his examinations at the Freiburg Conservatory under Harald Genzmer he became Fortner’s successorin Heidelberg. Here he maintained close contacts with the musicologist Thrasyboulos Georgiades whose rhythm and language studies influenced him the most along with his occupation with American spirituals and jazz. From 1963 to 1976 Heinz Werner Zimmermann was director of the Spandauer Kirchenmusikschule (Spandau school of church-music) in Spandau and then from 1975 to 1996 as successor to Kurt Hessenberg as composition teacher at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts (Brusniak 2001). Zimmermann’s best-known works are his sacred motets with plucked Double Bass his Organ psalms and his 'Prosalieder'. Among his chief works are his Missa profana the sacred oratorio The Bible of Spirituals as well as his Symphonia sacra. Amongst other honors Zimmermann has been awarded the Music Prizes of the cities of Stuttgart and Berlin a Villa Massimo Stipend in 1965/66 and received in 1982 the Johann Sebastian Bach Prize. The American Wittenberg University in Springfield bestowed upon him an honorary doctorate Zimmermann wrote three American theses including one at the Stanford University in California. Composed for Craig Hella Johnson and Conspirare the composer writes: Same Train in many arrangements seems to sing of good news coming. But - maybe it was the relentlessness the conclusiveness of the titlephrase - I wondered if what was coming might actually have been a funeral train: coming for our sister our mother and soon enough for us too. I thought of so many other spirituals which sing about dark truths in bright music and wondered if I couldn't use the imitative ch-ch-train ostinato to honour that willfully smiling aspect of the piece while also freeing the harmonies to make audible the more disconsolate feelings underneath.

A syncopated opening bass lick lays the groundwork for this quintessential a cappella spiritual. When the other voices join, we begin a journey of texture, harmonic development, and form, indicative of the great spiritual tradition.
