The present edition contains Twelve Sonatas for Violin Solo and Basso Continuo, Op. 5 by Arcangelo Corelli. The first part of the series (Z. 12050: Sonatas No. 1-3, Z. 12051: Sonatas Nos. 4-6) comprises church sonatas (sonate da chiesa), while the second one (Z. 12265: Sonatas Nos. 7-12) chamber sonatas (sonate da camera). The present edition is based on the first edition of the work published in Rome in 1700.
Very little is known about the two sonatas which appear here in their original keys. They were placed in the library of the Music School in Oxford at the end of the seventeenth century in a form convenient for playing (i.e.unbound). The library was catalogued by Hake between 1850 and 1855 and the sonatas were eventually bound in 1855 with other instrumental and vocal manuscripts of the same period, some of which are dated 1698.Thesonatas are both inscribed on the title page Sonata à Violone Solo. Giovannino(=Little, or Young John) must have been a performer, and although the third sonata has been copied by a different hand, it is conceivable that Giovannino is a connecting link between the three. He cannot, however, beassumed to be their author. The Violone was a six-stringed instrument with frets, and there is evidence to suggest that the Contrabasso of the same period was similar but probably a little larger; the Violoncino(=Little Violone, or Violoncello) must have been smaller. The word 'Violone' was also used as a collective term embracing all members of the Viol family, which means that the sonatas might well have been written for a tenor or abass Viol, and not necessarily a Violone as such. Indeed, when they are played on a Violone, or Double Bass the continuo bass line must be played at a lower pitch than the solo instrument, to prevent inversion of the intendedharmony. (The use of a Violone/Double Bass continuo or 16' organ tone would overcome this problem.)The editor has added no ornaments or embellishments to the solo part as it appears in the original manuscript. It isopen to debate whether a Violone player, owing to the very nature of his instrument, would have used any but the simplest melodic decorations. Nevertheless, the performer should acquaint himself thoroughly with those seventeenthcentury traditions that

(Thomas Enselein).

“Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano by Edison Demisov was composed in1970 and covers three movements. The first part, Allegro, shows serialism; the second, Lento, focuses on new techniques; with the last one, Allegro Moderato, reminiscent of Jazz music. This strong>Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano, dedicated to the French Saxophonist Jean-Marie Londeix, was strongly influenced by Western European music and requires a certain level of ability (intermediate to advanced players), especially for the second movement. Edison Demisov (1929-1996) was a Russian, Siberian-born, composer specialising in alternative / non-conformist Soviet music. Strongly influenced by the West, he was often criticised by his peers. He gained international recognition for the composition 'Le soleil des Incas' (1964) and wrote numerous concerti, sonatas and other pieces.”.

“Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) was a distinguished performer on the Flute. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that his compositions for the instrument are at the forefront of the Flute's repertoire, Sonata No. 2 being no exception. After a prominent career as a flautist with the Paris Opéra, he was appointed as professor of Flute at the Paris Conservatoire as well as principal conductor of leading orchestras. It was during this time that Gaubert composed, including his Sonata No. 2 which premiered in 1925. Addressing many technical features, including flourishing semiquaver passages, a wide range, emotion, intervals, chromaticism and complex rhythms, Sonata No. 2 is a challenging yet riveting and stirring piece for aspiring flautists.”.

Contemporary Japanese composer, Yuko Uebayashi moved to Paris in 1998. Uebayashi's works have been met with much success in both Japan and France, Sonata for Flute and Piano being no exception. Flautist Jean Ferrandis described Uebayashi's works as gems that, although they are so different, they yet belong to the same world, a world of vivacity, dreams, tenderness, humour, and one that is subtly contradicted by vehemence, virtuosity, melancholy and sorrow. Sonata for Flute and Piano is made up of four movements with a typical performance lasting around 26 minutes. Sonata for Flute and Piano is modern in style, exploiting tonality, rhythm and the ensemble, making this a sublime addition to the advanced repertoire of the instrument.

Jindrich Feld's Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano is frequently performed by virtuoso Saxophonists. Composed in 1989-90, the Sonata is elaborate and quirky, and successfully exploits many extended techniques on the instrument. Born in Prague, Feld (1925-2007) studied Violin and Viola with his parents before studying at the Conservatory and Academy of Music of his native city. His compositions, predominantly instrumental, soon became popular, being performed all over the world. As reflected in his Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano, Feld's style is deeply rooted in the Czech musical tradition, but he also integrated the main styles of 20th century Western music. The Sonata is made up of four movements, 1. Allegro ritmico, 2. Adagio/Bells of liberty, 3. Allegro vivo/Scherzo, and 4. Allegro con fuoco. Each movement of the Sonata presents different challenges, from fast, staccato, semiquaver flourishes to the lyrical slurred passages. This Feld piece is highly virtuosic, yet an excellent and enjoyable performance for all advanced saxophonists..
