The sonatas are not grouped according to their degree of difficulty, they are given in the order which corresponds with the Kirkpatrick nimbering. This is approximately identical with the order in which they were composed. In this way it became possible for the pairs of sonatas included in the selection to be placed closely after one another. Apart from inevitable minor alterations this edition follows the original text and its markings exactly. This does not apply to the fingering which is entirely an editorial addition. (In the original there is no fingering.) ABRSM Cello Syllabus title, 2013-14, Grade 8.

The 18 sonatas are written in church sonata form. They are short, their movements usually slow-fast-slow-fast. This music is based on the dialogue of the two voices, held together by the third voice. Despite their standard structure, these sonatas are varied, original and melodious.

These Sonatas were written as part of Jean-Xavier Lefèvre’s Méthode for the Clarinet. They are great stepping stones to the more difficult clarinet master works by Mozart and Weber and are also invaluable first pieces for those studying period performance on the classical clarinet. They retain Lefèvre’s original notation for clarinet and the bass lines are transposed down a tone so the Sonatas are playable on the B flat clarinet. The right hand of the piano parts have been realised from a single unfigured bass line probably intended for the cello. The piano parts are designed to be stylistic, complementary to the clarinet line, satisfying to play and occasionally challenging.

Thomas Bystrom's (1772-1839) major compositions are his three violin sonatas which were evidently completed in 1797. The original title 'Trois sonates pour le clavecin our pianoforte avec accompagnement d'un violon oblige' recalls the temporary practice of the violin part being considered secondary to the keyboard part so that such a sonata could be performed without the violin if necessary. Actually Bystrom's sonatas are genuine chamber music works rooted in the Classical period, with both parts being necessary contributions to the whole even if the piano tends to dominate the texture.
