Sonatas for cello and continuo bass (complete sources)

Very little is known about the two sonatas which appear here in their original keys. They were placed in the library of the Music School in Oxford at the end of the seventeenth century in a form convenient for playing (i.e. unbound). The library was catalogued by Hake between 1850 and 1855 and the sonatas were eventually bound in 1855 with other instrumental and vocal manuscripts of the same period some of which are dated 1698.The sonatas are both inscribed on the title page Sonata à Violone Solo. Col Basso per l'Organo o Cembalo. A third sonata bears the words Sonata à Violino e Violoncino … di Giovannino del Violone. Giovannino(=Little or Young John) must have been a performer and although the third sonata has been copied by a different hand it is conceivable that Giovannino is a connecting link between the three. He cannot however be assumed to be their author.The Violone was a six-stringed instrument with frets and there is evidence to suggest that the Contrabasso of the same period was similar but probably a little larger; the Violoncino (=Little Violone or Violoncello) must have been smaller. The word 'Violone' was also used as a collective term embracing all members of the Viol family which means that the sonatas might well have been written for a tenor or a bass Viol and not necessarily a Violone as such. Indeed when they are played on a Violone or Double Bass the continuo bass line must be played at a lower pitch than the solo instrument to prevent inversion of the intended harmony. (The use of a Violone/Double Bass continuo or 16' organ tone would overcome this problem.)The editor has added no ornaments or embellishments to the solo part as it appears in the original manuscript. It is open to debate whether a Violone player owing to the very nature of his instrument would have used any but the simplest melodic decorations. At the end of the eighteenth century, cellist and composer Jean-Baptiste Bréval wrote not only virtuosic concerti for his instrument, but also easier sonatas and duets that still belong to the core repertoire of pedagogical cello literature. Opening with impressive chords, the Sonata in C-major op. 40 no. 1 also offers beginners the chance to savour beautiful melodies and master smaller shifts in position. The Parisian first edition of 1799 leaves the choice of accompanying instrument open. For this reason, this Urtext edition offers several options: a two-part score from which a second cello may comfortably provide accompaniment during lessons, as well as a moderate setting for piano that may be used in concerts. Rounding off this starter kit for cello literature is a carefully marked solo part.

The six sonatas for cello and basso continuo in this volume all belong to the ?Fondo Correr? collection held in the library of the conservatory of music ?Benedetto Marcello? in Venice. This valuable collection consists of about thirty printed editions and some 1600 original manuscripts from various sources. The majority of these works is composed by Venetian musicians among them Bonaventura Furlanetto one of the last masters at the Ospedale della Pietà Gaetano Latilla Andrea Bernasconi Giovanni Porta Giuseppe Sarti and Antonio Martinelli. The latter (Antonio Martinelli) was one of the best known music teachers at the Ospedali Grandi in Venice. The three sonatas edited in this volume are his only compositions for cello accompanied by basso continuo that survive today. First edition.

per violoncello e basso continuo-Similar to Vivaldi's concertos and compositions for violin his 9 cello sonatas also bear the mark of a genius of exuberant temperament. Since they belong to the basic repertory of the cello it increases the importance of the edition that the music includes the partly deviating performing marks of the surviving authentic sources of the pieces for the first time.

Little is known about the life of Italian composer Pietro Giuseppe Gaetana Boni so it is fortunate that at least some of his music survives. His 1917 work the tenth of his chamber sonatas Sonata in C for Cello and Basso Continuo Op.1 No.10 has been edited by Hugo Ruf and the Cello fingering by Rainer Mohrs to create an authentic and accurate reproduction of this fine work.

The vast majority of violin sonatas from Vivaldi?s time including those of Vivaldi himself have come down to us in the form of a score employing two staves: one for violin and one for bass. This guarantees that although portions of the work may be missing what survives is textually complete. Exceptionally five of Vivaldi?s violin sonatas are preserved solely in a partbook for violin held by the Diözesanarchiv Graz the complementary part for cello having disappeared. The sonatas appear to date from the period between the Dresden group (1716-1717) and the Manchester set (c. 1726). Three of the sonatas which all have four movements possess partial concordances in other sources with which they share two or three movements but two of them ? RV 11 and RV 37 ? have so far been found only in Graz (with the exception of an incipit for RV 11 found in a contemporary thematic catalogue). This critical edition makes these two works available for study and performance. The bass part is an editorial reconstruction and there is in addition a realization of the continuo by the editor.

Edition for Violoncello-Like his father Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach wrote three sonatas for Viola Da Gamba. They were written during his time at the Berlin court of Frederick the Great and gave the excellent Viola Da Gamba player in the courtorchestra a chance to show his virtuosic skills. While the two Sonatas Wq 136 and 137 have a basso continuo Bach followed his father’s example as far as the Sonata in g minor Wq 88 wasconcerned: the right and left hands of the Harpsichord compete with the solo instrument in three equal parts. These sonatas can also be played very effectively on the Cello; the fingerings in the marked copies provide helpfulsuggestions.

Four Sonatas comprises: BWV 1034-1035 for Flute and Basso Continuo and; BWV 1030 and 1032 for Flute and obbligato Harpsichord.Bach’s preferred instrument for chamber music after the violin was the traverse flute. Yet today it is impossible to determine exactly how much music he wrote for this instrument or the genesis of those compositions that survive.
