This is the Score for Bent Sorensen’s 2001 composition Six Songs composed for Mezzo-Soprano and Violin. Sorensen has set four verses by Japanese poet Ono No Komachi and two by the Korean poet Hwang Chin-i in a typically dramatic and colorful style. The music compounds the beautiful and passionate imagery of each text which are all short verses loaded with meaning. 'Six Songs' are written for Lore Lixenberg and David Alberman

Written for SATB soloists with SATB chorus Brass Quintet and Organ this setting was inspired by the illustrations of 18th Century Japanese artist Utamaro. McCabe has selected a group of texts that are chosen to express the period of spring to autumn from the view of the Garden and it's inhabitants including the birds insects plants and animals. The texts are taken from sources as diverse as John Clare William Blake and Walt Whitman. The set was written in 2003/04 and commissioned by The John Armitage Memorial Trust.

Folksongs from Japanese Immigrant Workers in Hawai'i-Voices From The Canefields is a collection of folk songs from Japanese immigrant workers in Hawai'i. Folk songs are short stories from the souls of common people. Some like Mexican corridos or Scottish ballads reworked in the Appalachias are stories of tragic or heroic episodes. Others like the African American blues reach from a difficult present back into slavery and forward into a troubled future. Japanese workers in Hawaii's plantations created their own versions in form more akin to their traditional tanka or haiku poetry. These holehole bushi describe the experiences of one particular group caught in the global movements of capital empire and labor during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In Voices From The Canefields author Franklin Odo situates over two hundred of these songs in translation in a hitherto largely unexplored historical context. Japanese laborers quickly comprised the majority of Hawaiian sugar plantation workers after their large-scale importation as contract workers in 1885. Their folk songs provide good examples of the intersection between local work/life and the global connection which the workers clearly perceived after arriving. While many are songs of lamentation others reflect a rapid adaptation to a new society in which other ethnic groups were arranged in untidy hierarchical order - the origins of a unique multicultural social order dominated by an oligarchy of white planters. Odo also recognizes the influence of the immigrants' rapidly modernizing homeland societies through his exploration of the 'cultural baggage' brought by immigrants and some of their dangerous notions of cultural superiority. Japanese immigrants were thus simultaneously the targets of intense racial and class vitriol even as they took comfort in the expanding Japanese empire. This piece is scored for Soprano and Piano. A Penny for a Song was written in Autumn 1981 for Penny Price Jones and Philip Martin who commissioned it with funds provided by the Arts Council of Great Britain. It consists of ten songs prefaced by a piano piece which acts as a refrain heard again between Nos. 6 and 7 and before the last song.All the texts are miniatures; some are haiku a Japanese Zen poetic form and they all have in common a number of Haiku characteristics such as vivid imagery seasonal or natural and allusive brevity. The poems are small but they have a resonance extending far beyond themselves. Zen artists love to play with space: through afew brush strokes they conjure up a world of detail; they suggest infinitely expanding space through the implications of a few lines on a nearly empty background. This has been my approach in the music of A Penny for a Song. The songs are fleeting momentary; they are echoes of a world that is always there if we stop to listen for it.

This Night Of No Moon for Ensemble was composed by Bent Sørensen in 1998-99. Programme Note: The title THIS NIGHT OF NO MOON is taken from the haiku poem by the female Japanese writer Ono No Komachi (834-880) about the emptiness without one’s beloved the night without a moon the night without hope.In this piece songs and melodies are hidden - songs and melodies for this title and for other Haiku poems by the same poet.
