After preparing his Scenes historiques op. 66 for print in spring 1912, Sibelius had many grand plans but had to turn towards more profitable piano works first, due to his financial situation. Within only one month, he wrote the Three Sonatinas op. 67 in June 1912, which were published by Breitkopf already in November the same year. Although by his own accounts he did not like writing for piano and only doing it for income, he told in 1948 Erik Tawaststjerna that he regarded the Sonatinas among his best chamber music and considered them equal to his string quartet ?Voces intimae?. / Date parution : 2022-11-04/ Recueil / Piano

With the anthology 'Jean Sibelius: Piano Pieces' compiled for the Sibelius Year 2015 (150th birthday) the Finnish composer has finally made it into the ranks of the piano composers. Among the best of Jean Sibelius’ oeuvre are his 1917 compositions The Humoresques. This fabulous and charming concerto was divided into two groups for publication Opus 87 and Opus 89 and demonstrates his sublime skill with the Violin. He uses a considerably smaller Orchestra accompaniment to the Violin in the second group but maintains the subtlety of depth and texture. The opening bars of the Fifth Humoresque act as a continuation of the minor tonality that dominated the previous two pieces but the music soon reverts into a warmer major mood. Op.89 No.3 is the highlight of this group and one of Sibelius' most immediately compelling creations.

Jean Sibelius’ 1915 compositions Opus 78 are characterised by their sheer musicality and design for home study and performance. Beautifully arranged for Solo Piano by Karl Ekman Romanze Op.78 No.2 stands out following on from the previous piece. It changes the mood dramatically to a fragrant and sweetly uplifting atmosphere; nostalgic poignant and sentimentally romantic.
