Sibelius wrote the five-minute Romance in 1903 for string orchestra, originally titling it Andante. However he was persuaded to change the name about five years later by a critic's review. In 1903, Sibelius was still composing in a Romantic style, not the austere sounds heard later-on after he composed the 4th Symphony. Romance is made up of three sections; a slow Andante, a faster middle section and a slow third section. Mr. Sauer has distilled the music down to a lovely solo for Trombone and Piano. This crowd-pleaser will work well for advanced performers.

After preparing his Scenes historiques op. 66 for print in spring 1912, Sibelius had many grand plans but had to turn towards more profitable piano works first, due to his financial situation. Within only one month, he wrote the Three Sonatinas op. 67 in June 1912, which were published by Breitkopf already in November the same year. Although by his own accounts he did not like writing for piano and only doing it for income, he told in 1948 Erik Tawaststjerna that he regarded the Sonatinas among his best chamber music and considered them equal to his string quartet 'Voces intimae'. Advanced pianists with a penchant for Sibelius's music can welcome this publication with unalloyed happiness. Highly recommended!(Andrew Eales, Pianodao)Sibelius himself counted his Sonatinas among his best chamber music.

Karelia Suite, Opus 11 is a concert suite taken from an 11-movement work that Sibelius composed using Finnish folk music. The two selections in this arrangement are the Intermezzo and Alla Marcia and have a naive peasant feel to them with their simplicity. Karelia was one of the composer's favorite parts of Finland.Intermezzo is a bouncy march in Allegro as is the Alla Marcia which has a few key change surprises, adding a real kick to the movement. All parts are in bass clef and the parts are appropriate for moderately advanced performers. This arrangement is about 9 minutes in length.

Ann-Elise Hannikainen (1946-2012) was born in Hanko, Southern Finland, but lived mainly abroad, her father working as diplomat. Her grandfather's father was P.J. Hannikainen, the head of a prominent Finnish musical family. Ann-Elise's attraction to music was first found at age of five, when her family, then living in Warsaw, bought a grand piano. Hannikainen started to study piano playing at the Sibelius Academy in 1967, but rheumatoid arthritis prevented her from pursuing a carrier as a concert pianist. In 1972 she moved to Madrid and started to study composition with Ernesto Halffter Ercriche, a student of Manuel de Falla. Hannikainen advanced quickly in her career, and her piano concerto was premiered in Helsinki Festival in 1976. Her composing style evolved into luminous melodies, free atonal harmonies and improvisatory forms. Hannikainen wrote the two piano pieces Pensamientos 1974 (1974) and Toccata-fantasia (1975) in El Escorial. The first one carries features typical for piano writing of the Late Romantic, whereas the playful and improvisatory Toccata-fantasia gives a neoclassical impression.

Chachara (1980) is her first composition for solo instrument and piano, and it was also Hannikainen's last work to be premiered during her lifetime. The flute has the main role shifting between virtuosic and bel canto modes. The window of love, a distinct section of tonal harmony and singing melody was typical in many of Hannikainen's compositions. In Chachara this confession of love is heard in the middle of the piece (Molto moderato). In January 1981 Chachara was recognized in Barcelona with the first prize in the competition for young composers.

The Pytheas Center for Contemporary Music notes: Talma was the first woman to receive two Guggenheims, the first woman elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters (1974), the first American woman to have a full-scale opera performed in Germany, the first American to teach at Fontainebleau, and the first woman to receive the Sibelius Medal for composition. This is only the highlights of a long life of composing. Talma spent a good amount of time at the MacDowell Colony, where she wrote many of her finest works, including the Violin Sonata. Having studied composition with Nadia Boulanger over 17 summers in her youth, Talma dedicated the Sonata to her former teacher and long-time friend on the occasion of Boulanger's 75th birthday. The single movement reflects Talma's style in 1962, with more than a passing nod to 12-tone construction. For advanced performers. Duration: 16'.
