Entertaining titles of original works include Mission Possible (an entertaining spoof version of Mission Impossible) and Reggae for Carmen (an amusing mix of Stevie Wonder’s Masterblaster and the Habañera from Carmen) as well as other more traditional arrangement of tunes such as Danny Boy and House of the Rising Sun. The relatively simple top line combined with the more detailed accompaniment offers a range of challenges which will make this book of usethroughout the easy to intermediate stages of learning the guitar. A CD included allowing accompanied performance of the pieces at home. Although the CD is performed on steel-strung guitars this book is nevertheless also perfectly relevant for classical guitarists. Ton Van Bergeyk launched his career as a musician during the late 1960s playing blues Harp and Ukulele in a duo setting, but he then switched to the acoustic Guitar and quickly learned and mastered the instrument using fingerstyle techniques. He started to transcribe and arrange classic ragtime compositions for fingerpicking Guitar and was discovered by Stefan Grossman during a tour in Holland. Stefan produced Ton's first solo album, Famous Ragtime Guitar Solos, in 1973. This contained 14 of Ton's arrangements of classic ragtime pieces and became a best seller. In 1975, Ton's second solo album, Guitar Instrumentals To Tickle Your Fingers, was released containing transcriptions and arrangements of novelty rags, early jazz and popular tunes of the 1930s and 1940s. In 1980, Ton's third solo album was released and continued his exploration of arrangements for solo fingerpicking Guitar, this time with a repertoire covering jazz, blues, contemporary pop and country and even Mexican folklore. This album was titled Lulu's Back In Town, Hot Guitar Solos. Ton also participated in several anthology projects, i.e. Novelty Guitar Instrumentals, I Got Rhythm, Masters of Ragtime Guitar, The Entertainer and How To Play Ragtime Guitar. Instead of St Patricksimply converting the pagan warriors he is encouraged to listen to Ca lte’s stories and poems of an earlier time in which the saint delights.This secular/sacred osmosis is maintained unwaveringly throughout the entire text. By the end of the narrative one has witnessed not only the arrival of a new religion in Ireland but also a richly-recounted secular narrative map of the entire island: the peaceful and enriching shaking of two great hands.In preparing the libretto (the sung text) I have focused on only a few of the shorter constituent tales. This decision was born of the practical constraints of duration. I have however kept the skeleton albeit smaller of the overall frame in place. Finally for the sake of simplicity Ois n is removed from the primary narrative.The characters are not assigned specific voices. The narrative as a whole is carried by a persistently changing combination of voices and guitar. The one exception is Cas Corach the musician of the s d (underworld) who is most closely embodied throughout this setting in the solo interludes for guitar.The music itself is not ethnographically inclined; that is I have not attempted to reconstruct theories on Irish music of the period from which Acallam stems. However the score generally and especially in the guitar writing is imbued with an air
