The Fairy-Tale Narratives (Märchenerzählungen) for B-flat Clarinet (ad libitum Violin), Viola and Piano, Op. 132, belong to the few Schumann works that were composed, revised and published in a short time: composed in Düsseldorf, at beginning of October 1853, the new composition was already offered for publication to the Breitkopf & Härtel publishing house on 3 November and printed in February 1854. Composition and publication of the Märchenerzählungen were accompanied, though, by difficult times, the final days before the composer was admitted to the psychiatric clinic in Endenich. The work’s reception lies in the shadow of the last creative period: The pieces were associated with his life’s darker phases and were very little played. The Märchenerzählungen transmit Schumann’s single work for this unusual piano trio with viola and clarinet. The only well-known earlier example in this setting at that time is Mozart’s “Kegelstatt” Trio K 498 (composed in 1786). Schumann was certainly already acquainted with the work from his Leipzig years – it was played in one of the “quartet sessions” in 1829. / Niveau : Intermédiaire à Avancé / Répertoire / Clarinette, Alto et Piano

The New Robert Schumann Edition (RSA) is intended as a historico-critical edition of the collected works. They will be carefully studied and prepared according to present-day musicological and editorial techniques and presented in their entirety. Drafts, sketches and fragments, in short, everything that has come down to us as being authentically by Schumann and which, in most cases, has been deliberately preserved by him, will be brought together, evaluated as to its importance and documented in some form or other in the edition of the complete works.It is the aim of the edition to reproduce authentic texts which - having corrected scribal, copying and printing errors and eradicated later additions and other textual corruptions - will approach as closely as is possible the intention of the originals.The critical edition will form the basis of accurate performance material for Robert Schumann's work. / Piano

À l’occasion du 200é anniversaire de la naissance de Robert Schumann en 2010, un projet dédition ambitieux a été conlcu: pour la première fois après l’édition par Clara Schumann des oeuvres complètes de Schumann en 1879–93, toutes les oeuvres pourpiano solo sont publiées dans le cadre dune même édition. Par SCHUMANN ROBERT. 'Andante and Variations op. 46 Anh. for 2 pianos, 2 celli and horn': even in Schumann's collected works, one finds such an unusual scoring only once. No wonder the piece was initially left unprinted and only first released as a posthumous work. Schumann's widow Clara and Johannes Brahms apparently fervently believed in the piece and organized a posthumous world premiere with fellow Schumann admirers. In her first Urtext edition for Edition Peters, internationally renowned cellist Josephine Knight reveals Robert Schumann?s original version of his Cello Concerto in A minor Op. 129 ? a piece he actually called a ?Concertstück? ? removing generations of inauthentic editorial interventions. The story of the suppression of his Violin Concerto by well-meaning friends is relatively well-known. Few, however, know that the version of the Cello Concerto that is routinely heard today is so far from Schumann?s original conception of the work ? not only in details of phrasing and articulation, but also featuring a different ending with a bold final flourish from the cello. Composed in a burst of inspiration in two weeks in October 1850 shortly after he and Clara had moved to Düsseldorf, Schumann (who in 1850 was still in good health) never heard the piece performed. In an effort to promote a performance of the work, he gave the score to the cellist Robert Emil Bockmühl. Bockmühl made revisions that Schumann resisted, and the hoped-for performance never happened. Schumann?s health failed and he died aged just 46 in 1856. The Concerto, in an already substantially revised form, was premiered in 1860 but it was not given significant recognition until it was championed by Pablo Casals in the 20th century by which time (and since) the text for the work had accreted additions and alterations from generations of soloists. Now Josephine Knight, Piatti Professor of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music, London has returned to the original 1850 manuscript of the work, which is in the Biblioteka Jagiello?ska in Kraków, to reveal Schumann?s original thoughts for the first time in a modern Urtext edition. The edition reflects Schumann?s original conception of the work as a Concertstück and restores Schumann?s musical text, free of posthumous interventions. It is presented in a beautifully printed edition for cello, with Schumann?s original piano reduction. Matching orchestral material is also available from the publisher. ?My ultimate wish,? says the editor, ?is to give performers both access to, and confidence that they are playing from, an edition which is a true representation of the piece in its original form, no matter how much more difficult this might be. I found that incorporating the changes enabled the piece to take on a completely different character ? one that is lighter and happier, even ?cheerful?, as Schumann himself described the work.?
